Looking for info on where to report stolen coins

coinbufcoinbuf Posts: 11,362 ✭✭✭✭✭

Well it looks like I have become a statistic finally as the registered package on its way home from CAC has been lost. I thought someone posted a link to an organization that helps with reporting lost coins (cert #'s) but did not find that post when I searched, is there such an organization and does anyone have a link.

Thanks

I'm sorry to read about this. You may already be aware of this, but USPS mail delivery of packages has been painfully slow for the past several months and Registered Mail is only haphazardly updated online. Therefore, depending upon where you are and when the package was shipped, there may yet be some hope of delivery. Good luck!

Thanks Tom, yes I have been keeping up on the issues and reading the threads here on USPS problems. That is one reason why I delayed sending off to CAC until now in hopes that things would have gotten slightly more normal. Still have to wait a few more days before a claim can be filed but wanted to have everything in place for next week.

Does the PO acknowledge that the package has been lost or stolen? Registered is very slow and tracking is intermittent.

To early yet I have 4 working days before a claim can be filed so at this time the PO has not acknowledged anything, however I'm guessing that the most they will every say is that the package is lost vs stolen. There is still a very slim chance that it could still be delivered but I'm not holding my breath as the NJ area has been a hot spot for "lost" high value mail for the last few months. I can remember at least one other member that had a priority mail package from CAC that was lost in the NJ area recently and perhaps others. I've done the find my mail process with no result and the PO won't do anything else until the 15 working days is up.

I just need this info so I could bookmark the site and be ready to report the coins just in case the coins might show up at a coin shop. I've already written them off at this point and have very little hope, time to go thru the claim process and move on I guess.

Sorry to see this. Perhaps the Treasury Department or FBI If not found. I was taking a litho film class in the 70s and somebody in the class used the process camera and processor to shoot a bill. Somebody told the teacher and the Treasury Department was there the next day. Everybody in the class got put on a lifetime notice.

It will almost surely be delivered... once you file a claim. Not meaning that the claim has anything to do with it - just that by sheer (bad) luck once you invest the effort, it will somehow automagically show up...

I filed a claim 3 weeks ago at FedEx. My double boxed package with more than 50 PCGS graded modern gold coins has disappeared in their overnight shipment system. This was immediately reported when an empty box was delivered a day late. Was also reported to above crime links. It did not show up yet, and so I am not optimistic anymore. From what I have been told this is becoming more common.

Edited to say it did have a PCGS cert #30330342 1908-D Motto MS62 CAC $10 gold Indian, 28 first spouses, complete set of 1980-1984 American Arts gold medallions plus some extras graded MS64-67, one NGC 4466789-001 SWO-521D 1976 PF69UC Bicentennial gold medal, eight $5 gold commemoratives incl. 2 Boy's Town PR70FS, 1998 $50 gold eagle PCGS #71662978 in a World Trade Center holder etc.

If I was to guess based on tracking, these ended up in eastern Washington, Tennessee, or Virginia.

Sorry to hear about that @Goldminers, integrity seems to be in short supply these days. I have been using FedEx more recently and the insurance thru a third party ship and insure. Seems that packages with a high insurance on them has a target on it for sure.

Even with low insurance, I believe the packages have become targets as maybe some are recognizing the business names on the packages. This shipping situation requires much better supervision, improved video monitoring, and more serious investigating.

    .
i'm happy for you that it happened on the way back to you and not on the way there. now you know the grades and value can be assigned much more easily.

it would be brutal for me as the stuff i usually send off is MUCH less valuable outside plastic. varieties, toners and split-grade stuff (cherries in general). can't prove it is what it is as easily w/o those holders.

    Even with low insurance

i've came close but never signed up for private insurance but it seems like the packages i've received from dealers that carry private ship boxes that have no insur stickers on them? someone can fact-check me.

so it seems one of the things to work on and i'm positive others already have been, is to find a way to start shipping much more discreet, though a solution or even suggestion isn't coming to me just now but i will be working on it now. especially in light of 2020 events. only a matter of time if it hasn't happened yet for mail trucks of various types and post offices to be ransacked. everything else seems to be fair game.

makes me think that to hedge risk, overnight everything to where it is going (pcgs, ngc, cac etc) until the value can be assigned by a professional company. if you cannot hide shipping addresses or mask them, there simply is little protection. (i've shipped plenty of things express, so i'm kinda used to the cost but there are some benefits as well to take the sting off)

This last package I received went all over and took forever. Don't know what's going on lately but the mail has really slowed down. Except the junk mail.

  • fiftysevenerfiftysevener Posts: 909 ✭✭✭✭

USPS knows where that registered package sits. Based upon whether or not the last person that handled it still works there just go ask him. ;)

To be clear, it is brutal for me. I am the one who sent the FedEx package and these are some gold coins I have owned some for 5-15 years or so in graded holders. I decided to sell a few spares because gold went up finally. I did not expect this shipment to vanish, and so I did not spend much time on insurance values. Very bad idea, and not recommended.

Actually the actual value of the coins I sent is much more than my insurance value was stated. If this never shows up I will take a loss, the company insuring will take a loss, and the company who did not receive the coins will take a loss, and the thieves will win. This is not a good situation, if that is how it ends up.

@coinbuf, I agree with the many experienced people above, that you still have a good chance for delivery early next week. It is very unusual for a USPS Registered package to really disappear, so I am wishing you good luck. Depending on locations, the hurricane also may have caused delays, outside of anyone's control.

Think positive, at least for a couple of weeks, :/

Package was sent registered, so by definition delivery will be slow. Missing? Stolen? Way to early to conclude anything at this point.

Registered is extremely slow at the moment. Have one out their for 19 days, still showing movement. Have another out there for 29 days, still showing movement.

Go to the usps.website and initiate an online missing mail claim (not the same as an insurance claim). The nudge got mine moving again. I suspect they are getting put in safes and forgotten about. The nudge wakes up the keeper of the safe.

Any time I have registered delays, I monitor ebay for the coins. That's one of the first, early places a postal thief will go with them if not a local shop.

Wow sorry to hear that. I'm sure the loss isn't just about the money, but hope at least that part can be replaced.

The worst intake processing right now is in New York and part's of CA. I have had packages delivered to a NY USPS location but never officially scanned in. Eventually they will then show as being shipped to CA, then take a while again before they are shipped back to PA. If the intake USPS distribution center is near a port or a Amazon distribution center, expect the worst delays possible.

I've heard of a tremendous number of packages going missing lately. I'm not a paranoid person by nature, but I'd think twice before sending something irreplaceable right now. USPS needs to take some measures to restore confidence.

Even so, a registered package will most likely show up, eventually.

Reach out to USPSHelp on Twitter. I have had 3 "lost" packages in the last year, where it would reach a post office, and any updates would just stop. Last one was a few weeks ago. Package was stalled in Denver for well over a week. Reached out to the help on Twitter. Within 24 hours my package was updating again. Not saying it will work, but it has for me each time I have tried it. Just expect to wait around 24 hours for a reply from them after your initial message. Oh, and send them a direct message. Just posting it on their page does nothing. Finally, to save you some time, the initial meesage to them should contain the tracking number, who it was shipped to, and the address it was shipped to.
