For those that missed it, here is a link to Part I.

This coin exhibits two relatively common errors. A split planchet and double struck. However, this coin is likely unique. It was first struck normally, then WHILE STILL IN THE MINT, the planchet split. After splitting into two pieces, the reverse half (this coin) was struck a second time, but this time off center while sitting on top of another planchet. WHEW!!! A lot going on with this coin.

Not one of the rare ANACS holders, but I do like those small ones.
If they slabbed something like that nowadays, would they specify copper (bronze) or zinc planchet?
I don't think I've ever seen a split zinc planchet.
Good point.
I might well be wrong, but i assume that alloying metals helps create splits, and laminations, for that matter. Zinc, being pure, would be less likely (or not at all likely?) to split.
Just thinking about the route that cent took is incredible. Peace Roy

I had one and went looking for the photo but I sold it.
It was actually a 2000 zinc cent expanded die cap that split between the zinc and copper layer on one side.
That's too bad. Not that you sold it but that you don't have a pic. I'd like to see it.
Real nice error!
I would have to dig petty deep to find that photo.
On an external hard drive somewhere.
Here is one I had that is similar, but very different.
How does it even fit into a roll or your hand without being noticed?
Back in those days coins were released in canvas bags. Cents went into bags of 5,000 - $50. That is where they were found. No doubt there are errors that are intentionally created and/or smuggled out of the mint, but one like in the OP could easily slip into a canvas bag and be found there.
Neat error coin. I do not collect errors, but find them interesting. Some are so amazing they just had to be smuggled out....IMO.... It has happened, as we know. Cheers, RickO
They tend to get rarer after I sell them.
