Laura Sperber--Best Wishes for her Recovery

SonorandesertratSonorandesertrat Posts: 5,695 ✭✭✭✭✭

Legend's website notes Laura Sperber's illness. I did not realize it was so serious. My best wishes for successful surgery and a new kidney in the future.

    Laura is courageous.

Taught me a lot about coins and sold me terrific coins over the years .

That’s one reason why I consigned to Legend when I sold my US coin collection in the fall of 2016.

My first purchase from her was in 2000.

Please keep on fighting Laura and get well again ... . I will pray for you .

Best wishes to you, Laura, for a full and speedy recovery that includes complete mobility, total kidney function and no pain. I first did business with Laura 27-years ago and have never had a bad experience or bought a bad coin from her. Get well!

Good to see she is still her feisty self, in spite of the heath setbacks.
Hopefully she will have good results with the surgery, find a kidney and start feeling better again!

I knew she spoke of illness but had no idea the number and severity of her health issues. I hope she makes a speedy recovery. And if you're reading this Laura, consider buying some N-95 or KN-95 masks for the hospital stay. I have had luck at Lowes and Home Depot. The last thing you need is Covid-19 on top of the other issues.

I have known Laura for 20+ years now and she has been unfailingly and over the top fair to me in every transaction we have done, both buying and, more recently, consigning to her auctions. She certainly has her heart in the right place. I wish her a rapid and full recovery from her spinal cord surgery and Godspeed in finding a kidney. She is a tough lady and I have no doubt that she will get through this.

The affection here for Laura is wonderful, and I hope that Laura finds much comfort in it.

The marvel is particularly poignant, since she has also (and perhaps more visibly) been the target of derision here for her seemingly brusk commentary and strong opinions over time, and for the fact that she has struck many as so truculent in response.

I have to say, though, that I personally always thought I was very special based on her generous and supportive treatment of me over the years. How wonderful to hear that so many others felt they were every bit as "special" to Laura as well. What a commentary, and what a discovery! It in large part explains much about why Legend has been such a successful enterprise, and why Laura has been a mentor for so many.

The hobby in fact has many such wonderful and knowledgeable mentors (lots of them are here), and Laura is in the front ranks.

I hope you get out of this Laura.

Many years ago I bought some type gold from Laura, if I recall some gem mercs too. I don't recall when or details and is was before the PC age. Her grades and picks were spot on!
When I needed to sell a short time after due to sudden hardships - everything bought from others tanked for various reasons including quality, and grade - a royal disappointment. Anything bought from Laura sold for more. I will not forget that fact, and has remained in my mind since.

    Refuah Sheleima!

    Kick ass boss.

Looking forward to seeing you at an auction again soon.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

@tradedollarnut - Can you make sure Laura sees this?...

    UCSF artificial kidney clinical trial:

    https://pharm.ucsf.edu/kidney/device/faq

    1. Do you have a waitlist for clinical trials? How do I sign up?
If you are interested in potentially participating in the clinical trials, complete this form to submit your information into our [confidential] database:
      http://bit.ly/Database_Form
We can’t guarantee anyone’s participation since this is not an official wait-list. We will contact everyone in our database after we receive clinical trial approval.

    2. I filled out the form to be included in clinical trials – now what?
Thank you for your interest in participating in our upcoming clinical trials. Each clinical trial will include a round of patient selection for involvement. Until we have clearance from our Institutional Review Board (IRB), we are unable to release any patient involvement criteria for our studies. Once each trial receives approval, our team of doctors are allowed to begin the recruitment process. We will message all individuals in our database to alert them of our progress and provide information concerning the next steps.

    3. Where will the clinical trials take place?
Clinical trials will likely take place at multiple locations within the United States. As with patient criteria, the location of each clinical trial will not be confirmed until trial approval is granted. The first clinical trial will likely take place in San Francisco, CA or Nashville, TN, as these are the locations where the majority of The Kidney Project team is based.

    4. Previously, clinical trials were supposed to start in late 2018, and now it may be 2020 - why?
When we projected a timeline where clinical trials would begin in 2018, it was our most favorable scenario at the time. Our projected timeline has always been dependent on obtaining the required funding, and not encountering unanticipated scientific hurdles....

We are committed to advancing the development of the bioartificial kidney to patients as quickly as possible – without compromising safety. It is difficult to estimate exactly when clinical trials will begin, but we are hopeful that we will receive approval for the first human trial in 2020.

When I was younger Laura was always nice enough to show me coins even though there was no way I could afford them. She is definitely one of the good ones. I hope she makes a full and expedient recovery!
