NewP - 1799 Draped Bust... Whaddaya think?

I wasn't really in the market for one of these but I've always thought the draped bust dollar was special for being one of the first coins produced by a brand new United States of America.

I don't know squat about the series but am just starting to learn a little.

This one was likely cleaned at some point but not a harsh scrubbing. It has a really nice medium grey patina and still dirty in places. I know it's a 13 stars reverse (representing the 13 original colonies) and I think has no berries on the olive branch.

I have seen and was told about the B-22 reverse die break - mine is clearly an early die state of that example??

That's about all I got... tell me what you think?

It's been cleaned, should be tossed in the melting pot!

Kidding aside, it's a nice looking DB & would welcome it to my U.S. type set. Congrats.

George Washington may have touched that. He passed in 1799.

I dig it. ⭐️ Like you I’ve always had an interest in these and owned a couple over the years just for the fun of it. Great show and tell coin, too....the 18th Century.

Always a very cool coin to own.

The sharpness grade is VF-20 or do, but it does have cleaning running north to south. Overall it’s a nice, interesting type coin with an unusual die break on the reverse.

Your coin has a lot of meat left on it! I love the design and the fact that with yours the edge lettering, symbols and stars are readily viewable. This is a great series and your coin show quite nicely.

However, the die break across the reverse is too high to be the B22 die marriage. I will have to take out a reference later and see what marriage this is.

    Looks like a B-11, or BB-161.

That's a really nice looking example; cool die break on the rev. I'm a fan of all the draped bust coins, so much history during the years they spanned.

Sort of, PCGS CoinFacts has a die variety list on the main 1799 page if you click on "Show Related Coins and Varieties (21)":

That will lead you to the B-11/BB-161 page (and the others if you want to look through them):

Many lightly cleaned Bust $s straight grade. Have seen much worse in 1st world holders.

I've always been fond of this series.

Yours looks like a good collector grade piece.

VF+ details, seriously cleaned. $1K coin or so. I have bought and certified and sold nice fines for around a grand.

  • As you can tell from my profile pic... I love these coins! Good example and that die break is pretty damn cool! My 1797 is cleaned too... I feel like any coin that old you should just expect that, all the UNC examples are in museums or vaults!?!?

B-11a sound right, Bolander has it as a R-5 in his book, 3rd edition. Nice coin! Incidentally the B-22 is an R-5 also in the Bolander book...

Neat coin regardless of the cleaning! On topic: I do believe- unless the photos are not accurate, your Bust Dollar does have a bit more of an extensive cleaning than what is being stated.

Call it what you want. I've stated the coin has been cleaned at some point.

If it were my coin, I would put it in a old Kraft paper 2X2 coin envelope and then put it in a place where it can naturally tone. Eventually, I'd get a Capital holder for it. With the cleaning, I wouldn't pay the cost to get it slabbbed (insured shipping both ways and the grading fee gets expensive). It's a very neat piece of history and the date has that magical "17". As others have said, that coin may have been in the pocket of one of the founding fathers at one time. B)

    Really neat coin !

My first bust dollar was a '99....I bought it back in the early 80's. I took it to the FUN show at that time, one of the Orlando ones. A friend went with me and we shared a room at the show hotel.
My friend wanted that '99 in the worst way. The first night we settled in and started making trades. I consistently passed on his offers for that coin. We went to bed very late, but he wasn't about to let me sleep. OK, OK "I'll give you blah blah with blah blah"......" No"........ "How about ???" ...... "No"......Will you shut up and let me sleep !
I finally get to sleep......Must have been 3am, doesn't the fire alarm go off in the hotel ! (some of you probably remember that show)....My friend is calling my name, trying to wake me. After a day of airports and coin trading, I was out of it.....I'm thinking he's got an alarm clock in a trash can, trying to fool me. I finally wake up and realize it's the fire alarm. We were up there in the hotel.....I called the desk and was told it was a malfunction.
There were a lot of tired people on the floor the next day.....
I don't remember what became of that 1799.....

That is a great coin.... 1799...I would be proud to own that one....Cheers, RickO

A 1799 dollar was my first draped bust coin as well. Not nearly as nice as the OP, looking back on it now I know it had been scrubbed pretty badly but still it was the star of my collection as a teen. Wish I still had it... the reverse die was terminal with cracks everywhere, never seen another coin like it.

I like it... a lot! although it's been cleaned, it still has the detail that I look for in a type piece.
