A $2.50 gold piece would now melt out at around $250 !
Bizarre.
$250 used to buy five $20 gold pieces in the 60's and early 70's.

What were 1804 dollars going for back then?
Yes, and most folks buying them at that price at that time are dead today.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
When I was a kid my friends father was buying $20 gold coins for $40.
I could not afford them in the 60's.....and living outside the U.S. in the latter '60's and 70's.... I did get them when in the lower to mid hundreds though... lots of them.... Cheers, RickO
That's the way it works
I wonder if in 50 years from now anyone will be saying "I remember when you could buy a $20 Saint for only $2,000!"

I never bought any at that price because I was afraid of ending up with a counterfeit. I paid the retail price of $75 from well known dealers.
From what I did see of the pieces that sold for $49.95, they were really hacked up. My $75 examples went into MS-64 holders when the time came.
Yep ... times are changing.
I remember buying $5 Liberties in AU or so for $17.
Yes, it is true gold popped as the dollar fell the past few weeks, and US debt increased along with Fed influences. Will be a common theme in the future.
But I just don't like comparing $2.50 gold Indians to melt, because the remaining ones in any decent condition would be a terrible thing to waste.
They are worth more than melt and always should be.

I love them!

How many quarter eagles do you foresee going into the melt pot?
I might have a few to melt.
I have a solution for you topstuf, I'll give you (I'm a generous lad) $255 each for the four you posted. Not only will you be ahead of the melt price I'll be saving you the gas of driving those to the refiner
My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I’ll go $265

I'd like to hear from the other sharks.
$300.
A more accurate comparison would be in inflation adjusted dollars.
Nice stuf, topstuf!
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
When I got my gold Indian head eagle for $758 melt for them was about $660. Now the melt is over $900. It pays to buy gold
I know, but that's work.
I often look at guns and the prices "back then." Amazingly comparable. A Colt Single action was about $15 back in the day and now it's around $1800,
$300? Thank you, sharks. I think I'll just try to go it alone.

Well Indians and eagles both have feathers, so I guess I would say your other examples are still worth keeping after all The 1903 is already on fire. Stunning reverse toning.

This one looks much nicer than 63 imho.
