Why are so few coins dated 1963 shown on this forum?

abcde12345abcde12345 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭✭✭

Within the search history there are very few if any 1963 dated coins shown here. Lots of 1964- yet 1963 is severely lacking. Why? If you own a 1963 coin please show it off! I don't know what it is about that year that has people ashamed to collect those dated coins.

There is nothing to be ashamed of. Within the U.S. series, there are no well-known coins that excite collectors. You have to remember that there are just five coins, from cent to half dollar.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I wasn't keeping track. :*

I would tend to agree with above - there wasn't much going on numismatically in the early 1960s. High montages, no exciting varieties.

1963 was the height of the early 60's coin collecting boom. Coins of that year were saved in large quantities by the roll and bag speculators. Nothing from that year is generates much collector excitement or interest.

    All glory is fleeting.

The only interesting coin from that year, in my humble view, is the last year of the Franklin half dollar.

    Well, there’s more 1963s than 1965s.

In my opinion much the 60's coinage was poorly produced and mostly boring as the designs has shifted to all lackluster designs. You find a few interesting coins now and again but for the most part a very forgettable timeframe coin wise.

1963 was the year I got out of the Navy.... Young fellow, full of piss and vinegar, one daughter, one on the way...No coins in my pocket - due to income having many other destinations. ;) Cheers, RickO

I love 1963. Some good varieties exist, such as this DDO 1963 quarter.

Great variety....and one which has successfully eluded me....despite looking through many many rolls and 2 bags....
I am about giving up on finding one and may have to brush the cobwebs out of my wallet and buy one.
    Damn it!

I went through many rolls also and never found one. I picked this one up about 10 years ago. I couldn't pass it up for $8 in MS-64 Red. If you look for one make sure to get one that shows the tail below the 3 if it doesn't show the tail it is not worth as much.

1963's in copper can be unusually attractive........

Silver not so much........more aging needed.

High grade DCAM proof 1963 half dollars are a type collector's dream coin because they are of such high quality with knock out eye appeal.

1963 MS67 Red cents are extremely hard to find and are gorgeous.

I like 1963, for that was when I started collecting coins.
