Question about strike, 1876 S Trade Dollar.

kazkaz Posts: 9,179 ✭✭✭✭✭

Puttering around eBay looking at the Trade Dollar listings as I am wont to do, spotted this one in an Anacs MS62 holder. The obverse is normally struck up. The rev. has the mushiest right wing and right leg of the eagle that I have seen. Anybody have an explanation? I thought of grease in the die , but I really don't know. Thanks!

I looked at that one earlier today and wondered what caused this as well. Sorry I don't know the answer Kaz.

That sure looks like grease in the die, but I am not sure

My dumb guess would be striking pressure but could also be grease filled.
The thickest part of the coin is the last to strike up.
Here is one from coinfacts that shows similar weakness.

    Edited to add:
Both coins show what are often called roller marks on the planchet that were not struck hard enough to remove them.

Struck through grease in the die was my first impression as well..

When I have seen weakness on the right "drumstick" usually the claw is weak as well. In this case the claw is sharp. When these don't strike up well, it's usually the left leg that's weak. Thus my confusion.
Thanks for the comments and we'll see who else chimes in.

Diagnostic to that die pair, type 1/2 micro S and rare in attractive UNC for that reason. Gets AU real quick

I bet it was just the way the tech set the dies and presses coupled to a not perfect Rev die

So maybe a combination of inadequate pressure and die spacing, as well as characteristics of the die itself? Interesting, and something I have not seen before. Do you know if it's been written about , like in the Gobrecht Journal?

I would lean to the grease filled die.... Notice how the 'weakness' is at an angle from left to right (as viewed)... seems as if the grease were trapped in that area....JMO... Cheers, RickO

@KAZ It is worth noting that the central wing is one of the shallowest parts of the design on the die. Very susceptible to over polishing
