Group A was the first "serious" collection I formed when I got back into the hobby as an adult. It consisted mainly of mainstream, Redbook colonials, with a few foreign coins that circulated in early America.

Group B was the second collection I formed. It consisted mainly of foreign coins that circulated in early America with a few mainstream colonials.

Now I'm starting my third collection. I'm still deciding what it should look like.

    I’ll take the daily double!

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Joking aside, my initial impulse would be Group A just due to the inclusion of the Myddelton Token. If they were hypothetically for sale at the same price, I'd have to do further research before making a decision as pre-Federal coinage is not my area of expertise. All of the coins are quite lovely!

Group A has a few coins that are really tough to beat/replace if I recall and are really special like the Myddelton, Elephant, 1723 Hybernia...all in Group A are great. But then Group B is probably equally as nice but in different ways. Since I do not know the values/pops so that put aside, I would say It's very difficult to go wrong either way. Both groups represent excellent coins!

I've provided a bit of an explanation in the first post.

I’m a fan of group B given the designs are more compelling to me and the eye appeal Is better.

B with the admission that half of group B I now own or have owned.

@MidLifeCrisis I have to be honest, I'd go with group A. Why? Because I've looked at and lusted after the coins in the Redbook for more than 50 years. Set B has some of these coins but set A has more. That said, the intellectual part of me likes both sets equally. But the emotional part goes for A.

May I ask what happened to collections A and B?

A - St. Patrick, Elephant, others!
    B - I wouldn't want the Fugio "restrike"

  • Bob13Bob13 Posts: 1,489 ✭✭✭✭✭

Both are great. But, probably "B" by a slight margin since I feel it has more actual coins and fewer tokens. I'd probably be most excited by coins that were actually used in the colonies as opposed to some issues that ended up int he redbook for whatever reason.

I like both, but I'm in camp B. I think the coins generally look more impressive. Some pieces I like:

    • 1724 Louis d'or Gold
    • 1725 Spanish Pistareen
    • 1749 Netherlands 10 Stuivers
    • "1787" Silver Scovill Fugio
    • 1797 Counterstamped 8 Reals

First of all, thanks for getting back into the game! I'm sure you're happy as well?
Secondly, AWESOME coins dude! Both Groups. What a set of "Classy" coins. I would choose Group A. Why, because of that beautiful 1796 "British Settlement Kentucky" Coin! Exquisite Toning and eye appeal. Along with the other coins in Group A. Thanks for showing. ;)

    • "1787" Silver Scovill Fugio
    • 1797 Counterstamped 8 Reals

That is actually a 2 reales or pistereen

That 1749 halfpenny is probably the best that exists

  • BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,145 ✭✭✭✭✭

I like group B because it does not have the need to conform to a specific set as defined by someone else.

You can add and build to a broad Early American set which is comprised of stunning examples of world coins and America issues more freely. Many of the world issues are much more affordable than the American issues yet they played a clear role in early American commerce while the Redbook backed colonials only had a minor if not negligible role in some cases.

If forced to make a call...It would be group A. However, it would be under protest, since I find group B to have very attractive and interesting coins as well. Cheers, RickO

Thanks! I updated it to pistareen in my posts.

A doubloon is a term for the 8 escudos

Wikipedia indicates a doubloon is 2 escudos, not 8. This always made sense to me since doubloon means double.

The doubloon (from Spanish doblón, meaning "double") was a two-escudo or 32-real gold coin,[1] weighing 6.867 grams (0.218 troy ounces) in 1537, and 6.766 grams from 1728, of .917 fine gold (22-carat gold).[2]

I think I just wanted to use the word too much! :D

i'm a little late to the party but to make it easier on those that don't know, hold down CTRL and then slowly move your mouse wheel to zoom out/in.

after looking at the zoomed out groups, i cannot decide. if i choose one group, i'm not happy since there are items in the other group i don't want to leave behind. - for me, i'd have to do some merging but that may forgo the balance trying to be achieved. smoking coins no matter what!

Both sets are beautiful, but I think I'll buck the trend and go with Group A. It's personal preference and a long history of looking at Redbook Colonials ... thanks for sharing!
