I cant believe a coin can be so expensive with such ugly eye appeal

I feel while grade and scarcity matters so does the look of a coin and this sucker for $20,000 is just insane. I mean I could buy a car outright for that! The observe makes me wanna puke.

Well it is a MS61 and don't forget it's 10% off!
Looks like solid strike though ... net graded perhaps due to your concern.
Look what 4 points will get you at NGC MS65:
Wow
It does have the advantage of being struck from relatively new dies. Note that the stars are still very sharp and are not starting to bleed into the rims. Unfortunately, the toning is unattractive and in that price range coins should not be lacking in eye-appeal.
The toning on the obverse is not all that pleasing but the strike is very sharp. I can't seem to bring up an image of the reverse so no comment. 20K is not a bad price at all. Maybe even a bargain. Hey, maybe the new owner will do a "crack and bath" and it will look just super-duper!
I would say that the toning isn't all that pleasing but it's also not 100% terrible. At least Lady LIberty's face is lit.
A 20k car makes me what to puke. Heck I spent ~100k on my last car and is was just a Jeep. I've seen a lot worse but that is an ugly coin....
I wonder if this coin is a doctoring candidate?
What can a skilled doctor do with this coin?
The thought did cross my mind.
Ugly eye appeal? Quite the oxymoron.
Or how bout just send it to our host for conservation???
Not sure if they would do it or if it would grade after?
I'm sure the docktor could fix it in his 200 year old safe.
Just what every seller hopes for- having someone publicly call their coin ugly and post a link while it's listed for sale.
It's not expensive until someone puts up the asking price. Until then, it's just another seller looking for a live one.

The scratches would concern me more.
I was expecting much worse from the what the OP said. I’m a long way from being in the market for a $20k coin of any eye appeal, but people have probably done worse than an uncirculated 221yo dollar with a good strike.
.
well crap. i better stop using the internet for a while as i was trying to mouse over the other images from your snapshot. ><
i'm so gaga for unc bust dollars, now i gotta go view it. arghh

I thought I had seen that one before, it used to be in a 58 holder which is more appropriate I think:

Great memory!
Definitely the same coin!
Easy. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.
There are plenty of things people here are proud of that do nothing for me (and visa-versa, I’m sure).
So- the coin was previously graded 58, sold for $19,200 and after an upgrade to 61, is priced at $19,979. Not seeing the "insane" here, maybe that's just me.
It looks much better in the Heritage photos to me as the toning looks lighter.
.
ty for the heritage link. i like the coin much more from that set of images. not sure which is more accurate. do like the decent strike. the eagles neck/chest seem to be the common area of weak strike for draped $1s.
not trying to double your effort zoins, just wanted the big images visible to give context to the other set.

A few more crack outs and someone will have a 63.
Why do you assume the grade would go up?
Not a coin that I would want.
Because it will be retried if it goes down
Could just as easily be retried if it goes up.
Have you seen the coin in person? Has anybody commenting here?
I've seen uglier...
Yes, but people will generally be more satisfied if it goes up than if it goes down. I think that's why grades tend to go up for particular coins. Some coins are tried over 30 times. This is the reason Laura didn't want CoinFacts to have a lot of photos.
I haven't. Just commenting based on the photos and I've purchased many items sight unseen from photos, from Heritage and eBay. I'm holding what I think is a gorgeous Heritage sight unseen piece now.
Coins like this make the special ones stand out better.
While driving down the price of 60-80% of the other coins available in the market.
Here, the price of an AU58 18 months ago is now basically the price of a MS61.
Where are you getting a car for $20k??
I can certainly agree with the 'ugly' statements....However, it is a 1799 dollar.... That alone makes it impressive and sought after....and having survived for 221 years, well, one must expect it will have some marks and wear. Y'all know I prefer bright and shiny coins....That being said, I would be honored to have this one in my collection. No, I am not going to buy it....have other things going right now. I am sure it will find a home - or a physician Cheers, RickO
If you think it looks bad now, wait a few years until the dip that caused this look digs into the coin a bit more. The blotchy toning looks like an incomplete rinse to me.
I'll toss this coin out here for a comparison. This one is in an NGC AU-55 holder. At one time it was in an ANACS EF-45 holder.
How do I know that? I bought it raw from a collector about 35 years ago, We could not agree on the grade to price, so he sent to it to ANACS for a grade. They called it EF-45. About 20 years I cracked it out and sent it to NGC where it got the AU-55.
What would you recommend for the coin now? Another dip, rinse, and retone?
Nice looking coin. The breadth of your collection is amazing
So what sort of kick back to you get if someone buys this using your ebay partner network link?
Collector, occasional seller
this is sort of what I was getting at with a recent thread about what will happen with all the ugly coins
I know many here are loathe to even consider "Professional Conservation" but this coin is a prime example. I would tend to agree with BillJones that it has most likely been "worked on" by someone who didn't know what they were doing, hence, the ugly and uneven color.
I am no expert on restoration, but it needs to come out of that holder and get some conservation before the process goes further.

A numismatic point of order that too often gets overlooked and may even be a candidate for inclusion in forum rules. FWIW I kinda like the look of Liberty a little worse for wear but still looking supremely proud and defiant.
The op dollar is the kind of coin that is fun to play "wouldja rather" with.
For example, (money aside, for this thought experiment) I'd Rather have in my type set, a beautiful AU58 than this rather weird "61".
But would I Rather have an awesome VF? Of course not.
How about a gorgeous XF45?
Naaaaah
50?
Hmm, getting there, but it better be an amazing 50.
53?
Getting warmer
55?
Probably.
Boom.

Did someone attempt surgery without a license? Is there a real doctor in the house?
I typically only buy CPO Honda or Toyota, mainly CPO. Theyre reliable and last long, I can beat the hell out of them. On the other hand I have a c7 corvette and a 67 Camaro for the weekend, those cost way more than 20k lol
Shouldn't this be in a details holder? That's graffiti on Liberty's cheek.
@goldrealmoney79 i hope to upgrade to a C7 in a few years (currently C5, as my handle implies). It was much more expensive than what I take to work, too. Priorities!
