Gets me to wondering why I keep the rest of them.
Not really, but sometimes.

The point of the Box of 20 is to sell the rest, but not everyone can let go!
To me, having a Box of 20 of something is quite an accomplishment and just the start of a great collection.
I wonder the exact same thing........sometimes. But.....we REALLY do know why we keep the rest of them......BECAUSE WE NEED THEM!
I never collected like that.
I'm very happy that I dont collect around or because of what someone else thinks a collection should be.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
Good thread.
@ topstuf: Gets me to wondering why I keep the rest of them.
....because I like them all
It's just a step...Box of 20...10 boxes of 20...20 boxes of 20...
I am totally committed to have no more than 20 boxes of 20.
Why would the fact that a TPGS box holds 20 slabs have anything to do with your collecting goals?
I've been stuck at 23 slabbed coins for awhile.
I guess I'm getting too picky.
My Saint Set
I’ve been enjoying building several “ pages of 20”. Each page a different theme. Relatively cheap and fun.
20 bimetals
20 Indians
20 shapes
Etc.
Just fun.
Just fun.
This is more my style and enjoyment in collecting! At least nowadays. Early in my collecting years, I was far more gung-ho. What I mean was seeking more for higher priced slabs/coins. Even building sets. Today, just looking for cherry pick's and interesting ones, like mentioned above, for pages in my album. Also to fill my PCGS box/es. I love this hobby!

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.I thought about a box of 20 once. It would have been way too much effort to sell all my raw stuff and sets and I simply like variety.

At least!
I would think a "Box of 20" is a collecting strategy that requires more discipline than most collectors can muster, hence, the criticism it receives here whenever it gets mentioned. I don't know if that goal is achievable for me but it's a direction I'm headed towards as I get older and there are more collecting days behind me then ahead of me. the only "fly in the ointment" for me is that a standard PCGS/NGC box wouldn't hold my 20 slabs so I'd have to customize that part of it.
I'm not sure it's due to discipline. I think for most people having only 20 coins goes against why they got into the hobby. I think the hobby would simply be less enjoyable for me with only 20 items.
Well, I'm sure you have more than 20 items
Good thing NGC makes oversized boxes
I have boxes, and cartons, and cabinets and a safe....20??? More like 20x400....and maybe more. Nope, not my style... I like what I have, and I like what I will have... Bring it on.... Cheers, RickO
How many registry sets can be completed with 20 coins or less?
Two piles of twenty ea. 😎
Quite a few since there are sooooo many sets. So you’d have various year sets, general type sets, etc.

A collection made up of only a box of 20 would be way too restrictive for me.
WHO'S TALKING .....SETS ???
There's actually a showcase category for it. Most of the sets there actually have 20 or fewer coins.

I have a box of 20 proof coins started and a box of 20 gold. Next up is a box of 20 of my favorite commems.
I can't just have one box of 20 for everything. That would be limiting my collection too much.
I like the idea of a box of 20 for each series/type.
I've sold off everything but bullion stuff, and oogle and roll around in my aspirational Box of 20 (well, Box of 13 so far) like Scrooge McDuck, whenever I feel down.
Life is good.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Maybe I should clarify.
I took my storage shed full of 3,656,212 coins and realized there were some that I particularly liked for one dumb reason or another so I took 20 of my "Looky Lous" and put them in a separate box.
A green one just to differentiate from the 11.6 tons of other stuff and now I can periodically look at and think they're ALL wonderful beyond belief.
The sentiment, I think, is to focus on quality over quantity. More succinctly, perhaps, the sentiment is just to focus.
The collecting gene isn't too far away from the hoarding gene.
Well, I'm sure you have more than 20 items
of course I do, but I am closer to 20 today than I was a month ago. remember, I'm going down to 20, not up. and that NGC box might be good for the medal pictured but most of the others would be smaller than that. the best thing I can come up with right now is the type of box that PCGS sends over-sized items home to me from the factory.
The idea is silly, but the intent is to get one to focus on "great" coins and not buy willy nilly.
Obviously doesn't work for a series, but works for me with white rattlers.
The Collectors Showcase section of the registry allows for just about any configuration of your coins. Your imagination is your only limitation on what you can create.
If I ever go to a Box of 20, it won’t be a collecting strategy. It will be part of a liquidation strategy, keeping 20 coins as souvenirs from my days as a collector.

Some, like me, would rather concentrate their limited resources into a few that bring pleasure rather than dilute the collection and, for example, collect Morgan’s.
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
Sometimes you don't find the pleasure til you've THOUGHT you ...had...found it.
.............Confuse-us
Just focus on 20 Morgans
I'm along these lines but note that Pogue kept way more than 20 coins after he downsized. He a had a bunch of cheaper coins but still loved coins too much to have just 20.
I was thinking of regular (non-showcase) sets as I still see very few people building showcase sets.
In pre-33 US gold some popular registry sets include the following:
2 1/2 Dollar Indian date set requiring 13 coins (96 sets in registry)
5 Dollar Indian head date set requiring 10 coins. (47 registry sets)
A full date set of saints is 23 coins but most just collect the 18 non-5-figure ones (125 sets in registry)

Maybe as a sub-collection or a concentration of one aspect of a series, but only 20 would be too restrictive at this point. I'd considered a Box of 20 for 18th Century US type after I complete my Dansco 7070... or if I was ever to pick up IHCs again collect proofs... something like that.

One interesting thought is when you move on from a Box of 20. Is Box #2 typically in a different area or coins 21 - 40?
I think the concept of a Box of 20 is better suited towards a run of key dates or a niche of the hobby like exonumia. I have been building a Box of 20 for some time now. 20 of the most iconic token and medal designs from the Civil War era. Building a complete collection of Civil War tokens is impossible, even if one has enormous wealth. Narrowing it down to interesting pictorials or very rare tokens with great eye appeal is a fun way to have a noteworthy collection while you pursue other things

I just sent in an order for 20, hopefully one of them makes my box of 20. That I haven't even started yet and yet will sit next to the other 20 boxes that make up the Lincoln series
