You mean the days of little old ladies sloooooooowly pulling coins from their purses and counting each one as they hand it to the clerk, while your ice cream melts on the checkout belt, have ended--and this is causing massive disruption to our economic system?
He who knows he has enough is rich.
BTW in the 1970's there was a shortage of cents and the Treasury ran a promotion for citizens to return them to circulation. Those who participated received an official certificate of appreciation.

Yes I did.
I will dig it out at some point and post a photo.
Meijer’s in Michigan started that a few weeks back.

I read the article. Kroger's will apply the change to your loyalty card or donate it to charity. How nice of them.
How about round all amounts down to the nearest dollar.
I like to use my debit card for purchases, and keep my paper money. So, works for me.
We're getting paid a substantial bonus for turning in our coins.

Step 1: Go to teller
Step 2: "I'd like $5000 in quarters"
Step 3: "I'd like to deposit $5000 in quarters"
Step 4: $500 profit
My local Lowe's has now posted a new sign. If you do not have correct change they will issue a debit card for the difference they owe you.
Now if they would just pay that much interest on your savings account.....
Coins are on the way out, finally.
Dave
Another sign of the times.

Stickup men seldom want change in their transactions.
Unless the bank has gold coin!
Last week I turned in some more change to my local bank, a different branch this time than the one visited a few weeks ago. They said they were not experiencing any problems.
Interesting times we are living in.

I have had no issues at the local market(s)....and purchased ice cream last night and received two quarters in change at the local ice cream shop...Coinstar has not had much activity lately...Cheers, RickO
I find it hard to believe that there is a change shortage, but apparently I am a victim of incorrect thinking.

I wonder if these shortages are regional. I was talking with a postal clerk that has been at the PO for years and pretty much handles all the problems and could easily be the top dog at our PO. I asked him if they were having any problems getting change. He looked at me with that look....what kind of stupid question is that. The short answer was no. I would imagine the PO uses a lot of change.
Think about it coins just don't disappear, some get lost, and some become parking lot classics, and others get put away in sock drawers, there is "No" real "Shortage" they want the US to become Cashless so "All" of your spending is digital and RECORDABLE no transaction even for a pack of "Gum" will go unnoticed........Peroid
Banks don't get their change from customers. They get it in rolls from the privately owned Federal Reserve. What exactly is a local bank going to do with a bunch of extra change?
Check out my iPhone app SlabReader!
They ship it out to the coin processors (Brinks, Loomis, etc.) and they in turn get rolled coin from those same places.
Hey buddy I want all my cash back, not just 10 percent
"Parking lot classics." I like that.
Kroger is doing the same in Tennessee. Only store doing so at this time I know of.
I went shopping today in NW Indiana and nobody had a problem making change.
I went to 4 banks today and sold each of them a box of quarters and got them to agree to give me a call when the coins started flowing again. One hand washes another and I sure didn't need those junk quarters.
A local Mobil station called the police on someone spending real $2 notes, so what do you expect with poor management?

Sometimes the general public's lack of knowledge about coins and currency can cause serious problems. People have been arrested for trying to spend "counterfeit" money that was actually just older currency or coins that the clerks AND police could not identify as being real.
I recall a local case a couple of years back in which someone spent a circa 1950 $20 note that ended up with an arrest. The note was genuine.
I went to the Post Office and got some brand-new, shiny quarters in change. No shortage there,
Then........I went to HyVee and they told me about an hour ago that the self-checkouts were closed because of a "coin shortage".
The regular cashiers seemed to be dealing with coins, however. I checked out at customer service and got some more brand-new, shiny quarters.
I knew it would happen.
This has been going on here where I live for 4 wks now.
Many years ago I worked at a convenienve store and there was posted a flyer from the local police dept warning cashiers to be on the lookout since a fake $5 bill had been passed in town. There was a picture of it and it was obviously just a series 1934 with the larger light green seal.
Could be a warning that someone's collection got stolen and was being spent!
