What happens to the rivalry?

Here is an odd but honest question... Does the Cowboys & Redskins rivalry immediately carry over when the team changes its name? Or as there is no history with the Cowboys vs. RedHawks (or whatever), does the rivalry end? What counts more in a rivalry, the location of the team or the name?

No way it changes! If they move out of the division then for sure that’s the end of the rivalry but the name has nothing to do with it. That’s the way I see it!

Shouldn't really change. I'd say it's more a Dallas vs Washington rivalry at this point that Cowboys-Redskins.

I would like them to become the Washington Palefaces. Any ideas for the logo? It must be whiter than a freshly built snowman.

I sure hope it doesn't change. I think the fans will remember the history and they'll still hate eachother's guts, which is the most important thing.

The correct answer is "the Cowboys & Redskins rivalry immediately carry over when the team changes its name."

<<< What counts more in a rivalry, the location of the team or the name? >>>

That's an interesting one because it always struck me as funny that the Dallas Cowboys being in the NFC East, are located not even close to the Eastern part of the United States. Even though i fully understand the historical reasons behind that, it's still funny.

That being said, the strongest rivalry is almost always within a given league division, unless it is say the two premier teams in a league going against each other.

    Watch out.

Dallas will be the next team receiving demands to change its name from the Cowboys. That name has to be offensive multiple someones.

It has the word Cow in it. Perhaps that word alone is offensive to vegans.

It has the word Boy in it. Boy is offensive as it is typically masculine to some, it is racially offensive to some (African Americans) and it is offensive to those who prefer that the male half of the species did not exist.

And it has the word Cowboy, which in itself is viewed by some as a symbol of white privilege, white patriarchy and everything that is wrong with the USA.

My reply is part in jest, but sadly also in part a prognostication.

Well, the most-commonly suggested name - RedTails - is already owned by someone else. So that particular trademark squatter won't benefit despite his recent application for the trademark.

The spirit of the long rivalry will always exist. Past history/memories are handed down from generation to generation. I do think that many Washington fans will still refer to them as the "Skins" regardless of an official name/logo change etc. Especially within those fans who have a long history with the teams past. I believe that Billy Kilmer,Pat Fischer,Joe Theisman, Doug Williams, John Riggins, and the rest of the old guard will always be referred to/introduced as/noted in conversation as a Washington Redskin.

I think the rivalry will continue.

I think the majority of fans are neither offended by the name of the team, nor care that it is being changed.

The guy who trademarked a bunch of potential names offered them up for free to the Redskins around the 4th of July and got no response.

I recall in the early days of the internet, some were buying up countless numbers of domain names in order to grossly profit from any company who obviously would want to use it. Then they quickly passed a law against doing this. IE if say a famous entity such as Hewlett Packard hadn't yet registered HP.com, and someone else did, that registration from that person would be voided, and HP would get the domain name.

Trademarks are trickier, and there are attorneys out there who make a living understanding trademark law. But based on the guy's seemingly "generous" offer to give it for free, i have a feeling that he's probably been advised that he cannot stop a famous entity such as the Washington Redskins from using a name that fits their organization. That his trademark would be voided anyway, hence his "generous" offer.

This guy with the trademarks IS a lawyer. He said his motivation was not financial but more to speed the plow. He’s a ‘Skins fan and it seems he wanted to want to ‘protect’ the Redskins from such difficulties when the name change took place. I am sure he’ll get something from the Redskins out of the deal - tickets, a meet n greet, merchandise, etc - but they also have to select a name he’s already trademarked.

    For the OP:

Is it really a rivalry at all? Both teams have sucked for almost two decades, producing a combined 5(?) playoff wins in that span of a combined forty seasons.

I mean are we going to discuss the WWF Brooklyn Brawler - Papa Shango rivalry next?

Interesting take, I don’t know the laws regarding trademarks but it makes sense that the guy is offering it for free then if what your saying is true. Not a chance I’d offer anything to an NFL team for free if given a chance.
