Newp: Pan Pac $1 Gold
This is my first win from GreatCollections. Always thought one of these would be a nice compliment to my 20th century gold type set, which of course doesn't have a $1.
For those of you who have followed my posts you know I prefer to buy only coins with trueviews. Now that I have a photo setup and can take my own pictures I've thought about taking a chance on more coins. The cac label gave me a little confidence.
In my opinion this is a super nice coin. Im not sure why it is a 64 vs 65. Great luster in hand, and I think my pictures are pretty accurate color wise.
I am very disappointed that the slab has some scratches and a bad scuff right over the ridge of the nose on obverse. It is an obvious blurry spot on my photo. Maybe I will send it in for reholder. Maybe regrade and shoot for a 65?
Very happy with the coin and GreatCollections bidding, checkout, and shipping were fast and easy.

Nice looking example, and agree with GC being very customer oriented.
Very nice
Agree, very nice. If you send it in for a regrade you will get a trueview. You probably could polish out the scuff on the slab if its not too deep, on the other hand.
Congrats on the pickup!

Congratulations! My Pan Pac dollar is one of my favorite coins.
It’s simple to fix a scuffed slab.

I like the color profile on that coin. Very attractive!
Very nice!
Thank you for this. I will have to check out amazon for some plastx. Have a couple slabs that could benefit from scratch removal.

+1.
Nice! I've always liked the design and how they managed to get so much on such a small space with simplicity.
I like it! It is a very nice design.
I am not a big Comm, guy but that is a nice coin.
Very pretty and I too agree that you should be able to buff that mark off the slab without much issue.

If you’re going to send it back to PCGS in an attempt to get a higher grade:
1. I agree using Regrade you might have a better shot at a 65 than via Reconsideration (any grade), BUT...
2. With Reconsideration, your potential upgrade might end up as a 64+, BUT...
3. With Reconsideration you keep the SAME cert number, so if you end up with a 64+, the CAC sticker will get AUTOMATICALLY reapplied (for only $3), since CAC ignores “+” grades. With Regrade, you get a different cert number, so YOU then bear the risk of not getting the CAC sticker reapplied, whether it comes back as a 64, 64+, or 65.
4. With either method, if it gets upgraded to a 65, you run the risk of not getting the CAC sticker back, since CAC may consider it a “C” coin as a 65. So you need to ask yourself, if indeed it does get upgraded, would you rather have a 65 where it might not get the CAC back, or a 64+ with the same cert number that will get the CAC sticker automatically reapplied? Only YOU can answer that question.
Good luck, and let us know what you decide, and the outcome.

My collecting “Pride & Joy” is my PCGS Registry Dansco 7070 Set:

Of all of the $1 Commems, this one is my favorite.

Also, one of my favorites. My all time favorite is the $2.5 Pan-Pac Commemorative with Liberty holding a caduceus (symbolizing the defeat of yellow fever) while riding on the back of a hippocampus (mythical creature that is half horse and half sea serpent).

Nice!
Really nice coin and great picture.... although you can probably resubmit and get a + , many veteran collectors would prefer the coin in its current slab, not a tabbed version
Commems and Early Type
Thanks WS for the detailed response. For this particular coin there would be no considerable value difference between a 64 or 64+. A 65 would outweigh the cac sticker. As you know from our previous exchanges I am not "all in" on cac. Though I am coming to appreciate the value in cac confirming the coin is decent even if seller pictures are not.
In any case the sticker or upgrade is not my primary concern - just good pictures. And it turns out I can take pretty decent pictures myself now. So maybe its just polishing the slab.
The cost of sending the thing back to pcgs for a new holder and trueview would be offset in value increase if it came back as a 65.
Ironically Amazon sells every product on earth except for plastx (only 3rd party sellers). They have a variety of other plastic cleaning / polishing compounds in stock. HMMM

I hope to also get a $2.5 pan pac eventually but out of my price range for right now.

That is a very nice gold coin.... and if it were mine, I would leave it as is and polish the slab. I don't sell coins, so an upgrade would not matter to me. Your coin, your choice.... In any case, enjoy a really nice gold coin. Cheers, RickO
Update:
Got hold of some plastx and tried polishing the slab. A big improvement but didnt remove the defect entirely. Have been practicing my coin photography. Here is an updated pic of the Pan Pac:

great coin!
Nice photos! The color looks a lot like mine.
There seem to be a lot of these "toned" $1 pan pacs. I wonder if the planchet alloy was not mixed well or something. In any case I think the color is great. Really attractive coin, but so tiny that it is much easier to appreciate with good pictures!
