Just exceptional. Like the look. Alittle challenging to grade from the image. My grade opinion of MS64 is based on the lustre is more vibrant in hand. The fields look terrific which in my view makes ruling out a 65 tough. There seems to ever so slight cabinet friction on the monument. I would still give the coin a high MS grade based on the fields...they look amazing.

Torn between 58 and 62. Seems like rub on the monument as well as the volcano and plume. But if the fields don’t show signs of circ it may get the nod. I’ll go with 58

Fantastic coin, regardless of the number on the holder.

I see I was low, but these unevenly struck coins can be tough, especially from pics! Beautiful example.

    Not even the rare assayer!

By the way, don't you have a FD assayer in your collection?

OK, I'll show you my 1817-So FD. It's MS63, and there is a MS64 recently in the census. A bit crude and those large open field areas are very prone to scratches, unfortunately....

Mine is NGC, but I didn't send it. I bought it that way.

That is a very nice example of the 1817 FJ.
1817 FJ is certainly quite scarce in that condition, but they do appear every now and then, this being THE most plentiful of all Volcano Pesos. I did a rough census a few year ago, and found over 150 recorded examples, with an estimate of 300-500 examples. Now, 1817 FD, minted only in the 4th quarter of 1817, is a scarce coin. My estimate for this issue is about 15-25 examples. The example bidask posted is a superlative example of this scarce issue and I congratulate you for it.
1817 without the assayers initials is, of course, rare. My estimate for this coin was 10-12, at most.

Brian, I have never seen one, however, I am told it does exist.
I will see if I can find out some more information about this example.

I wonder if Medina had any note of one in his book on Chilean coins

Do you have Carlos Jara’s book "Chile’s Coquimbo Mint: a documented history"? I would think he talks about it or at least has some translated inventories from 1830's from the mint.

I do have the book but the 1830 is a Santiago issue, and probably more rare than a Coquimbo, but not covered in the book.

All Coquimbo are dated 1828 but the pieces were likely actually minted in 1829.

I contacted the author of a 2017 book published in Chile in 2017 dedicated to the 'Chile Independiente' Pesos. He sent me a photo of an example from 1830 which is thought to be the only one known for this year.

I’d love to find a copy of the book.

Yes, I would like a copy as well. I will ask the Author whether the book is available, and where to purchase, and will let you know as soon as I hear from him.

Well done! Such a great design. I hate that they holder the volcano as the reverse. They just did that to my Peso I sent in.
