Reeded Edge 50c NEWP - Start of a set or a collection of one?

BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,103 ✭✭✭✭✭

Well I generally am not buying many US coins anymore, much favoring the Darkside but this coin spoke to me. Now, am I going to do the full Reeded Edge set in EF45ish or is this a collection of one?

    That’s a great looking coin!

Quit while you’re (WAY) ahead...unless you want to torture yourself, by trying to put together a set with each coin as nice as that one.😉

The bar is set pretty high with that one.

I agree with Mark, that one is exemplary and a perfect type coin ( I was admiring that on the Early Bird)

That's a wonderful example. I would stop now unless you have at least 10K to put down for the rest of the set in that grade and eye appeal.

Nice coin. Be careful, it is easy to get hooked on all the bust halves if you aren't careful. Lots to choose from in the XF-AU range.

I love bust halves but for reeded edge I'd stick with that one...at least for a while.

Nice coin but stick to the dark side.

Pretty sure you’d have to do an AU-55 set to match that one! A beauty.

    Wowza!
Like others have alluded to, it's a really tiny set with a couple of tough keys that'll cost ya 😅

I like the AU 55 comment especially! That's where to hunt if you're looking to provide this beauty some companionship!

    You only need 4 more.......

I did a "set" of just one. The 1836 RE in best grade you can afford. I once owned an XF beauty. :(

Very nice. I would consider a set of one. If you stumble across another coin looking like that then you can decide. Love your hold US goldcoin set by the way

As someone else who used to collect primarily US and now collects primarily darkside, I am all for picking up random US coins that speak to me without being sucked kicking and screaming into US set collecting again. Very nice look on your new bust half... congrats on the NEWP! :)

Lovely! Reminds me of my '36. Nice pair.

Yours is way undergraded. I'd call it 53, easy.

Sorry...I didn't mean it that way. I just saw a nice similarity.

    Should I delete it?

LOL. No. The 38-O looks nothing like OP's.

I saw CRO's early bird announcement. And man, I was tempted by that '37.

You can find an 1838 to match. But, good luck finding the 39-0 or 36 like that. Quit while you're ahead. I'm surprised CAC gold beaned that coin as it technically is an XF45 on wear and detail, though with great eye appeal and surfaces. And it would undoubtedly bring next grade money.

Gorgeous coin. No matter the decision moving forward, it'll be a fantastic set.

It would Be a nice challenge to find other reeded edge halves with similar eye appeal. Lots of reeded edges halves are just urgly. Maybe even delve into the varieties? I say go for it.

In my case, that would be a set of one....A really nice coin and deserving of the gold bean....Cheers, RickO

I have never followed set collecting so I am leaning to the "Collection of One" concept as I did with this Barber Half, also from CRO.

  • jayPemjayPem Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've been noticing some great new sets being put together in what I'd have to call a fairly new area of collecting.. the eye appealing CRO set!
    😄
I agree with one and done, but I do think it would be tempting to keep an eye out for a 39o with a similar look.
That's be a great set of two 💪
