I usually pay with checks at shows. Never have had a problem but I usually purchase from the same couple dealers who know me.

Lots of interesting approaches to this topic, really. Maybe it’s a good thing I just use cash: helps me keep spending in check. Lol.

With all the cash and such at shows, you’d think there would be more security to and from the parking area. At least the shows I’ve been to (granted, not a diverse set) you’re kind of on your own. Maybe that’s why I don’t like carrying too much.

Lol, good point. It is funny to look around at the various buyers.

    Checks ...

Cash is risky to carry, and you have limited records for tax purposes. Yes, a few of us still have some coins from which we could realize a gain if we sold them.

Credit cards put you in a 3+% hole as soon as you start negociating with them.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I usually ask for a receipt.

Most dealers will gladly write one up for you.

I’m really surprised more dealers or even members on this forum don’t use Venmo, it’s super easy, no fees. The last local coin show I went to I asked a few dealers if they took Venmo, they looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. On the other hand I sell odd things here and there on a local classified page and old ladies roll up asking me to take Venmo. I’m not sure where the disconnect between Venmo and the coin collecting industry is but it sure seems like a happy in between of cash and credit.

Funny you mention it, both Venmo and Apple Pay Cash were in my mind when I started this thread. Neither may be common or thought about from the dealer side.

I only use cash for any in person coin/collecting purchases. And, if I can, I prefer to use a USPS money order when buying online. Sounds crazy, I know.

Venmo is owned by PayPal and I would assume will start charging for transactions just as PayPal does now. I think they're just trying to build more users first with the "no fees" angle, and then when everyone's entrenched, they'll lay on the fees. I've used it for a few coin deals, but usually with other collectors, not dealers. I usually offer dealers checks so I can avoid the 3% credit card/paypal fees, and most online dealers have been willing to give me a better price when offering to mail in a check. The waiting sucks, but eh, I'd rather wait and save the 3%.

If it was THAT desirable don't you spose the dealer community would have pushed for it long ago? Would they be more accepting of it if it resulted in a 20% increase in sales at a show?

I think it would increase their sales significantly but trying to convince dealers to do anything new and different is an uphill battle. I can tell you with a high level of confidence that if you want the younger generations money you are going to have accept things like Venmo but by all means if you want a check then I’m not going to tell you how to do business.

I only carry enough cash to pay for the incidentals - drinks, bad convention food, etc. I always make my purchases by checks and have for many, many years with no problems. If I ever make a purchase from a dealer who doesn't know me, I can always point to a dozen other dealers in the room who will vouch for me. Carrying a wad of cash is too much of a hassle and no security issues with the checkbook.

As I posted in an earlier thread today... When I lived in the PNW and went to shows, I always carried cash...sometimes a very large amount if I was planning on one or several significant purchases (often gold). Never had an issue and negotiating is easier with cash. I am my own security, so that is not an issue....Cheers, RickO

    Cash here too.

Some time ago I asked about the limit of cash collectors would feel comfortable carrying say to a show like FUN. Just curious what others think. Would you buy a HR Saint at a show with cash for example?
