Compliments of the nefarious copycat merchant chopmarking by Hans Schulman probably circa in the 1950's- 1960's. Taking a common uncirculated high mintage 1890 and chopping to increase its rarity/value because he was a dirty dealer. But still rare to me.

Very interesting!
Also looks like PCGS certifies these!
Despite the fact that the Schulman chops are forgeries, they still have a dedicated collector base. I consider them to be a part of the history of chops, as one of the earliest (and for a time, most successful) attempts to fabricate chopmarked coins on a large scale. For years these passed as genuine, seemingly without anyone questioning why they showed up on a wide variety of issues that saw very little circulation in China, were always placed in the same position on the coins, and virtually never had any chops apart from the Yon Kim Hong marks.
The tools themselves were genuine, though very late in the scheme of chops, and I have never seen a coin bearing these marks alongside additional, genuine chops.
I did not know about these fake 'chops'.... Thanks for the information... I cannot make out what the 'chop' is supposed to be... and it certainly does not look like any real chopmark that I have encountered. Cheers, RickO
The mark is actually the merchant's name (Yong Kim Hong) in Malay script. A second mark exists in Chinese, also indicating the merchant's name.
ChopmarkedTrades,
Is there any reference you can point us to, regarding Schulman's forged chops? I would like to read more about this.

OK. I have them packed away, and will have to dig them out. Thanks
