NY International Show Summary

I am in the airport typing this up as I am about to embark on a 15 hour flight sequence including a connection in Rome. I missed last year's show due to work constraints and this was the first time coming back since relocating from the US (in particular, NYC, where I had resided). I made it to the show flying for 17 hours via Paris as a far less expensive flight, allocating 4 days to this experience.

My objectives for the show involved a) Spending time with folks I have not seen in quite some time - fellow collectors, dealers, auction houses b) auctioning off a chunk of my ancient coin collection with Stacks c) Finding new material for the collection. During the course of the show I had spent much time with wonderful people and skilled numismatists such as - @EVillageProwler @Nap @Cathy @coinkat @bidask @pruebas @Romancoincollection - friendly and hospitable dealer/friends such as Andy Lustig @MrEureka and many others.

Upon landing in JFK on the Wednesday, I took a taxi straight from the airport to pickup material waiting for me in the US. I then met a friend who passed by NYC after attending the FUN show and had an early dinner. I rushed to the Hyatt to attend lot viewing for the NY Sale where I had one lot in mind which was being bid on that evening. Upon arrival, exhausted, I was told that the lot viewing is over - I was able to get a fellow collector's opinion on the coin, and ended up bidding from the room and winning the lot at a premium price - sharp coin for a typically crude strike.

Woke up a few hours later (at 4AM) and ran out the clock to meet a friend for breakfast, register for the early bird, and meet friends on the bourse floor hoping to find materials. I quickly spotted a very common coin, with a charming look to it. A Salzburg taler with a clear overdate to boot.

I wandered the floor and ended up selling quite a few pieces that I had marked for sale in advance of the show, unfortunately not finding others to buy. As an aside, this is the first show that I walk away with far fewer coins (more sold than bought). Another piece that I could not view in hand was a Heritage lot that I did not bid on during the live auction - it went unsold, yet I made a post sale offer that was accepted. The coin was already gone, so will receive it the next time I visit the US - A GEM Archduke Maximilian of Austria - Seems lovely.

I also bought an Italian crown that is on its way to grade - an impulse purchase which I had avoided for quite some time yet it came from a friend dealer from Italy and the coin simply spoke to me!

Friday was more of the same, yet a high degree of anticipation for the Stacks auction where i had auctioned off some of my ancients materials - https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1029651/consigned-some-of-my-ancients-to-stacks-january-sale#latest - I thank the forum friends who sat through 125 total lots to conclude my smaller share - results were quite decent! Then off to dinner!

The final days were quite enjoyable - spent time looking at various items - medals, minors even banknotes. Last night concluded with the NY Numismatic Club dinner and picking up a few thing my wife wanted me to bring back for her and the girls.

One can say - why fly so far for 4 days ? Because I love this hobby and what comes with it. I will aim for a European show, yet hopefully can commit to making this trip a habit for the upcoming years.

I know that this is a long winded write up from a fatigued collector without much substance yet hopefully it communicates the overall experience!

"Archduke Maximilian of Austria - Seems lovely."

    Indeed it is.......

Great seeing you after 2 years and I'm happy for you that you were pleased with the auction results of the ancients you let go. I too picked some nice coins ...that did not necessarily fit my core collection of cap and rays but they
were to nice to pass up .

I bet the 4 days you spent at the show went by FAST ! Thanks for sharing your crowns you brought to the show.

It was great seeing you again, and the company at the show was fun! Sorry I missed a few of the forumites though. I have to admit being at a show where I now recognize people adds a lot to the experience. Happy hour at the @MrEureka table is always a bonus, though I'd like to point out it's always 5 o'clock somewhere.

And personally, I have discovered I like sitting in on auctions...even when not bidding--though it's nice if one forgets their bidding card upstairs the phone still works while sitting in the room

I could never sit at an auction without bidding. But I’m careful which auctions I attend in person and which ones not, bidding via an agent. The NYINC is definitely worth a transatlantic return trip, especially after long absences. Your reports keeps our flame alive! Nice Z!

On an unrelated note, the thread shows @SYRACUSIAN as the last one to comment. Plus I got an email saying he did. But I don’t see his post. It’s the second time in a month I’ve noticed this. Does that mean he doesn’t have posting privileges or something? It’s odd.

Edited to add: his post should be between the two of mine.

    I see the same.

Thanks for the report. That 1614 Austria Taler looks amazing. When you get it, hope you will post a video in hand.

Yes it is. But it’s there now. Heather Boyd must have fixed it! Awesome. My world is right again!

Interesting about the missing post. This happens to me with other users but I do see this post by Syracusian!

It wasn't there initially (along with another post on a different thread). I saw an email notification and knew they should be there. There was commentary on another thread (on the US side) where certain users were having this happen and it was allegedly a version of a soft ban. Could have just been a glitch, or an IP thing too I suppose. Odd though for that to happen to Dimitri except maybe the IP. The PTB (aka Heather) seem to have fixed it and now the post is where it should be :).

Were you at NYINC? If you were I totally missed you, but I thought I'd hit every table. Then again my head was down and I wasn't always noticing which table I was at.

It was great seeing you at the show. Crazy how much has happened in just a few years since I saw you last. Congrats on your additions and hopefully on getting what you wanted out of your ancients.

@Zohar @EVillageProwler and others - what did you think of the auction results? How does the market seem? What's hot and what is not?

I witnessed strength on the bourse floor and on auction for choice coins. The market is maturing and with broader access via the internet and global auctions collectors and dealers are being more selective

I don't know what you paid for your ancients but it seemed like they fetched strong prices - congratulations! The auctions were brutal from a buying perspective.

    This ....

And there was plenty of action for lower priced raw darkside coins .

Gem classic foreign coins were strong ......

I bought a couple nice crowns and paid up!

Boy are they nice though .

I applaud those who can find great raw coins

Is not as easy as it was a few years ago .
