"Suspect" 1903 $20

burfle23burfle23 Posts: 2,407 ✭✭✭✭✭

Currently for sale on the internet, coin and slab look off.

Image comparison is of this one and a known genuine example (courtesy PCGS):

Coin shows in the on-line cert as previously sold back in Mar '18; unfortunately there are no images of the coin itself.

Thoughts on this one appreciated!

Definitely looks like a fake to me. The mushy reverse, the font style of the 1903 is slightly different and the fields are extremely smooth...

    PCGS needs to know

I notified my contact there as soon as I saw it.

Seller ended the listing; I did find the previous sale and images show the same "coin". Unfortunate it shows on the PCGS valid cert auction history.

The reverse is really bad on this counterfeit.

No doubt about that one. I can't believe someone would try selling that garbage!

well you helped me think of either a more scary scenario or at least equally scary as the:

authentic coin but actually lower grade in a higher numerically graded counterfeit holder.

i wonder if anyone has seen a counterfeit coin in a counterfeit holder with an authentic insert? - doesn't seem like a big upside as it limits quantity.

although i guess they are both somewhat limiting on quantity.

100% counterfeit. The weakness in the design, "crumbling" design elements, and odd luster give it away...

Thank you for including photos embedded in this thread instead of just a link to the eBay auction which sometimes gets pulled. Thumbs up from me!

A very bad counterfeit, but not as bad as the 1915 $10 gold that was shown to me earlier in the day. It looks like the fake slab logo on the back bled over into the fake slab label on the front.
