It might be well to show what the sites looks like today. It is my understanding that it was on the former site of Filene’s Department Store in downtown crossing, if they still call it that. The building was torn down some years ago, I believe. I moved over 15 years ago.

The same was true when Filene’s was there.
The Widener Building is on the site of the second Philadelphia Mint and the William Greene Federal Building stands were the first mint was. There are markers on those locations too.

Wish I would have known about this in 2003 when I was out there, I would've seen if I could find the places. Had a fun time in Philadelphia.
The site of the second mint is near city hall. Given what I have read about it, it sounds like a stinky place that might have been a modern Super Fund Site. It was torn down soon after it closed in 1901.
The first mint site is five or six blocks up and one block over, from side where the current mint is, from Independence Hall. It was torn down in the mid 1920s by Frank H. Stewart.
The third mint still stands and is now a condo, I believe. It’s a distance from the tourist district, and I have never seen it.

You know, I checked on the ground all around where the mint was and didn’t find ANY of these!
If you are still in the area, I know for a fact where one is buried.
Oldest Time Capsule in US Unearthed at Massachusetts State House
The capsule was buried in 1795 by then-Gov. Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. The Stunning Fate of the Oldest Time Capsule in the US https://youtu.be/NRmxv1oJO3Y https://youtu.be/La1ODMb64NM
The folded newspapers appeared to be in very good condition. Also inside were silver and copper coins in various denominations dating from 1652 to the 1855, when the capsule was opened and then resealed.
I really like those old coins... Still hoping to dig one up someday.... my area certainly has the history that would allow for such a coin to be 'buried' somewhere around here... Cheers, RickO

There was a guy that dug one up a few months ago. There were articles in all the metal detecting magazines about him.

But seriously, I was actually just looking at that large planchet pine shilling on the “coins you’ll never sell” thread. Beautiful!

That’s so cool. Shovels are allowed on the T, right?
Of course they are encouraged...................shovels come in handy when the T derails.
