Coin sets. How many?

Hi guy's, how many sets have you completed and how many are still in your collection? If desired, explain an interesting story about one of your sets. Thanks in advance, guy's. <3 Here's my story. During my whole collecting life, I only completed two sets. One was the Silver Eagle Set. Then again, can you say you completed a set when the series continues to Mint? And the other set was the Buffalo Indian Nickle set. Sad to say, both sets have been replaced for cash. Yes, sold both sets! The Buffalo Set was the more interesting of the two. I was very pleased when I finally completed. I even had quite of few variety ones in my set. Placed in a beautiful Dansco Album. Of course, the most troubling individual coin to commit in buying was the coveted "1913s TYP.2". I wasn't sure if I should spend a premium or just be conservative and spend close to the minimum? I chose to be conservative. VG.
Sure I did receive a pretty penny and profit but still regret selling. One thing about this crazy hobby, many regrets and would'a's, could'a's and should'a's. LOL

I did the ASE (up until the year they did not mint one), Kennedy halves, Franklin halves....and the CC Morgans. I still have them all... Cheers, RickO

WoW! Nice sets. Esp. the great C.C.'s. Now, are you still adding on yearly to the Kennedy?

I have completed a few that once they were done I sort of lost interest in keeping them or continuing them: Liberty Nickels, Indian head nickels, Jefferson Nickels with proofs, Barber dimes, Liberty (Mercury) dimes, and Roosevelt dimes.
I decided to keep a few completed sets like my Flying eagle and Indian head cents, Lincoln wheat and memorial cents, Barber quarters, Standing liberty quarters, and Washington quarters, along with my Barber halves, Kennedy halves, and Peace, Susan B's, Eisenhower, Sacajawea Dollars and Presidential dollars.
Once the sets are complete I either continue to upgrade them or on a couple I just retire them and let them as is. I continue to work on the earlier US large cents and have completed the Red book varieties of the Coronet and Classic heads but not the earlier ones.
I am into another project now and that is a selective type set of 19th, 20th and 21st century non gold....who knows what's next?
As long as I am having fun with them I will continue.

I collect NGC AND PCGS coins, so I have Three sets finished by those standards. 1. the Walker short set (1941-1947) 2. Walker intermediate set (1933-1947) and 3. Walker one-per-date set. (1916-1947). 4. I also am 96% done with the Walker Early set (1916-1933), as I only need one coin. I am currently searching for that coin as we speak, so that I can write a nice ending to a 12-15 Year story. Other sets that I'm working on: Standing Liberty Quarter One per date (1916-1930). I'm 50% done with that and Morgan one per date (1878-1921)....I'm only about 25% done with that one.

That's a great feeling, knowing you only need 1More Coin! Congrats. You have some cool sets there. 15YRS. WoW!

Thanks a lot. Yes, we're coming up on 15 years, as I started in late 2005 but was then dormant for 3 years, until late 2009. So, I've been technically and actively building for about 11 years,

I remember, the third set that I was starting to collect. It was the famous Morgan Dollar. I was collecting only PCGS graded Morgans. I think I had my collection up to 22. 1 of each year and mint mark. Then my interest and fire stopped. Out of work didn't help also. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Sold them as well. :s

Yes, I am really burned out. Once I find that last coin; I am going to just kick back and relax. Not gonna buy anywhere near, as aggressively, like I have in the past. But I am not going to rush to sell, however, as I have put WAY too much blood, sweat and time into this set to do that. Besides, I'm attached to it and like it a lot and I don't need to liquidate it from a financial perspective. I feel like I've lived a Walker collector's dream and I am very grateful for that. Time to explore other avenues and just appreciate what I have. If I see a nice coin, then I'll buy it, but won't feel compelled to.

I see where your coming from. I too, after a certain time in my life, I decided only to collect Varieties and Error coins. The fire I once had in collecting sets switched to the "Dark side" of variety/error world! My opinion, much more fun, interesting and rewarding. Mentally, as well as, financially. <3

It's not even about varieties or errors or key dates or anything specific. Sets enforce a certain rigid structure to collecting.

I own one Indian cent - I mean other than my dealer stock. Why? I think that one looks cool. I own a few Buff nickels in high grade. Why? My favorite 20th century design. I have a variety of coins from around the world. Why? They spoke to me when I saw them. So, when I'm at a coin show, I just look at everything. I have no "want list". I have no holes to fill. If I like it, I buy it.

I am completely unconstrained. I'm not trying to complete anything.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have a complete buff short set, all toned, but it’s only 12 coins. I’m one short of the one from each year set. (1921)

I’m trying to complete an all toned short set of walkers and I think that’ll be the extent of my “set” building.

Slabbed sets: Franklin half dollars (both business and proof strike), Peace dollars, Indian quarter eagles, 1940 - 1964 Washington quarters.

Raw sets: IHC, 1946 - 1964 Roosevelt dimes, One Washington quarters 1932 -1964, Two Washingtons quarters 1940 - 1964, Three Franklin half dollars (business strike), Peace dollars

For the last 10ish years I've been working on an 1858 business strike set. There are 29 denomination and mint marks. Realistically two of them are out of my price range. Of the 27 in my range I've got 14.

I have eight sets. Two I'm only passively working on and don't care if I ever complete.

Passively and do not care if I ever complete:
Basic U.S. Coin Design Set No Gold (1792-present)
20th Century Type Set, Major Types No Gold, Circulation Strikes (1900-1999)

    Dead set on completing:
Indian Cents Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1859-1909)
Lincoln Cents Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1909-Present)
Lincoln Cents Preservation of the Union Shield Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (2010-Present)
Lincoln Cents Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1909-1958)

Plan to complete, but not high priority:
    Small Cent Type Set (1856-present)

As you can see, I like my small cents, even moderns

Does anyone have some kind of strange and/or unusual set you completed? My Dealer friend has a "Acid Date" Buffalo Set. How 'bout a "Low Grade" Set. I see it all the time on the Forum where someone just had slabbed some sort of low grade Morgan or Kennedy.

I put together a classic commem type set in the 1980’s and 90’s. Sold it while values were high just before they dropped. Not brilliance on my part, just blind luck. Now I have a pre Civil War one per mint group of HE’s and QE’s. Done but tweaking and upgrading and getting better dates. Some pretty scarce coins are very reasonably priced in pre Civil War gold. No hurry, just collecting.

Too many. Eight sets of Jefferson nickels alone. Why? As to the rest of them.....common stuff. Washington quarters 1932-64. Mercury dimes. Roosevelt dimes. Lincoln pennies. Kennedy halfs. Franklin Half dollars. Presidential dollars. Statehood quarters. Walking Liberty halfs. AND.......BRITANNIANS. I love them! On and on. Indian head cents. Liberty nickels. But no Standing Liberty quarter sets. STOP!! Who cares?

BUT.....the most important to me? Capped Bust Halves. Have all of them 1807-36. Always upgrading that set. I'll never finish that one. CAPPED BUST FEVER!!!!!

    Buffalo Nickels (Dansco album)
    Peace Dollars (Whitman album)

    In progress:

I've been exploring 1982 and below in US cents.
I'm at the point to record and store, as I was going through
kinda finding my way in the dark on a budget of a homeless person.
I'm gonna try to attempt sets graded with my knowledge and eyeappeal,
Its a shot in the dark but just have to be honest.
