Damn I was about to say that’s quite the addition to your type set. That babe needs to go to CaC for a sticker!

It’s a nice looking coin. However, with a buildup like that, (though unintentionally) you’re inviting disappointment. Check Coinfacts and you will be treated to quite a few fair 😉looking examples of various dates.

You should be able to buy it.

    It’s pocket change, only $15,000 :D

Indeed looking at Photograde you’ll see better, but this isn’t too shabby. 😛

Great strike on that 1854, but the 1885 Proof is prettier.

I agree - nice, but for "prettiest", you need to look at some Cameo Proofs like this one.

Hey, it’s not fair comparing apples to oranges (Mint State coins to Proofs). Proofs will always look nicer, and that’s why when high grade proof coins are affordable compared to Mint State, that’s what I buy for my Type Set. But @asheland ‘s point was that his friends MINT STATE $3 Gold is absolutely gorgeous, and I agree! Super clean fields, a hammered strike, and a luster bomb! It looks like it was made yesterday.

Love the awesome strike on this coin along with the lack of obvious distracting marks. Jealous!

    1. It might help if they first see a CAC on it, before resubmitting.
    2. Tough question - would he be better off crossing it over to PCGS for "added" value???
    3. Even if he ends up with a "+", that's still better than the 65.

I think it was fair to make such a comparison, considering that the thread title made no distinction regarding business strike vs. Proof. But below are a couple of attractive business strikes. Maybe this thread will lead to some new registry sets. Either way, congratulations to asheland on a great addition.

No fair! These two blow the others away.

I was torn about posting what I did to this thread. But I’m anti-hype, regardless of who owns the coins. And thought that those who are unfamiliar with how nice/attractive some $3.00 gold pieces are, might have gotten the wrong impression, otherwise.

Unless your friend submitted it raw himself...or lucked into first shot with the original submitter....odds are that if it were going to cross it already would have, let alone go up a grade.
