Went to Long Beach on Friday

Only stayed a few hours. Went to drop off some coins for submission for possible upgrade and to sell the rest of my friend's late father in law's foreign coins.
The show was very quiet. This, despite the fact that I saw many nice coins available for sale. I haven't bought or sold anything in three years. I go to shows to see nice coins, visit people I know whom I can only see at a show, and to get an opinion about submitting coins for upgrades.
Joe O'Connor had the two nicest Bust Dimes (from the Pogue Collection) I've ever seen. A 1795 that was as white a a newly minted Roosevelt Dime with subtle aqua toning on the obverse, and an 1796 almost as nice.
Laura had a 28 S Stander in FH 67. I looked at it. Type II Standers from branch mints are very rarely fully stuck. There are almost always several rivulets in the shield which are soft or undefined, and they typically have a "just made it" full head. Ie., you can see the ear hole and the complete line of the hair across the head. The three springs are hardly visible.
I have one of these in FH 5 with iridescent toning with a hammered strike in a first generation holder. Jay Cline would call it an ultimate full head. I have never seen a 28 S as fully struck as mine until now. Laura's coin is struck just as well as mine, but is an attractive white coin.
I had another confirmation that grading is all over the map for MS 65 Capped Bust $s. I saw a lifeless coin in an MS 65 holder. I am guessing it was dipped too many times. I have seen very few MS 64 or MS 65 coins of this series that have in my opinion, been unmolested.
I was able to catch up with Tom Reynolds, whom I like and respect immensely, as well as another contact, who small remain anonymous, who has helped me out greatly over the years.
Speaking with grading experts re submitting coins for upgrades is educational; it's better than making an expensive mistake.
Depending on the coin and the grade to which you are trying to upgrade a particular coin, there are limiting factors: some obvious, some subtle. A few factors below are taken into consideration, irrespective of a coin's strike and eye appeal.
1) Coins which have been dipped at some point and retoned will not upgrade beyond a certain point. The grade limitation depends on the coin. Ie., a nice Seated coin described in the last sentence has a higher limitation than a nice Capped Bust coin.
2) Likewise for a coin which has some streaking. Subtle streaking can be easily missed, especially with bad lighting. This can keep an MS 66 coin from getting into a 66+ or 67 holder.
3) Toning - It has to be subtle, or it will limit a coin's grade, unless it's a Morgan that may have had an acid trip the 1960s. Ie., I have a beautiful copper toned Barber Dime in an MS 66 holder. The toning does not impede the coin's luster, but the color is too thick for a possible upgrade.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
A very nice report. Thanks.
Good report and I appreciate your professional contacts in the hobby .
You know what your talking about !😊
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
I'm assuming you're talking about capped bust halves? Agreed that they are most often dipped and retoned in the MS grades in my opinion. I don't think I've seen more than 1 or 2 which had that dusty original look. Also what's this about a 1795 bust dime?
Thanks for the report. I'm hoping to make it out to the next long beach show.
Thanks for your show report @Elcontador.
Very nice show report....Thanks....Interesting points about potential upgrades. Cheers, RickO
