What do you think is the best city to host a big national coin show in?

Me personally... best = Orlando.
I'd totally be in favor of permanently moving the World's Fair of Money there.
Early American Copper, Bust and Seated.

So what would you do with the Summer FUN show?

I'm not sure I follow you. The summer FUN show is held in Orlando...
Early American Copper, Bust and Seated.
I agree, probably Orlando. Chicago and NYC are good also but too expensive.
I think moving it around is fair and affords more people the opportunity to make a show.
I was just thinking about that for next year. I was thinking that sounds like literally the worst city for a show, but I guess we'll see
Early American Copper, Bust and Seated.
Not sure about the best city, but the best place would be on a cruise ship. Imagine a boat load of coin collectors partying on a 3 days cruise
Not Chicago.

Chicago/ Rosemont is obvious.
The FUN Winter show will also always do very well, exact location may vary.
The market has already sorted this out.
Boston, NYC, and Philadelphia are the most historical US cities. I regret with the shows in Philly I did not go to see the historical exhibits which should be mandatory. With the loner tendencies of numismatic hobbyists it becomes harder to get motivated when in these cities to see the major historical exhibits.
Chicago/Rosemont I'm 30 minutes away.
IMO, it should be an easy place to get in and out of, have a decent restaurant scene, a decent local base of collectors, and a convention center of the appropriate size.
Portland was a bit too far out of the way, even though it was convenient for me. I'd love to see it in Salt Lake City. It has everything but the big collector base, but the Wasatch front is a beautiful place everyone should visit at least once.
Edited to clarify. I think SLC would be nice for a winter show, but probably not the right place for the Summer ANA. For that show, I like Chicago's central location, but I really dislike Chicago in general. Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, Indy, Minneapolis, or Nashville would be reasonable. For the winter ANA, I'd add San Diego, Phoenix, San Antonio, and maybe somewhere in the Carolinas.
Indianapolis would be nice. NO sales tax on coins or bullion either.
I'm not sure I follow you. The summer FUN show is held in Orlando...
Exactly - so, you're suggesting back-to-back shows in Orlando just a couple of weeks apart?

As an ex-New Yorker, I would love an ANA in the Big Apple. However, between the costs (any hotel would be at least $300/night) and lack of venue (the Javits Center and Madison Square Garden are too big), I just don't see it as a viable option.
Remember, you have to keep the dealers happy so, any city that does not have a major airport (with lots of direct flights in full-size jets), is not going to work.
The recent survey by the ANA (which looked at anchoring the summer ANA in Chicago) seems, for better or worse, as the best alternative right now. Then, take the smaller Winter ANA and shuffle that all over the country to fly the ANA flag.

Charleston WV. Centrally located on the east coast. Cheap.
Baltimore used to be the best place in the east coast until crime became a concern. I really want Baltimore to retain that status. The area where the show is plus little Italy is great. New York City is too expensive and Philadelphia has long had union problems.
Orlando is the best in my opinion. You have the amusement parts to make the family happy, great weather in the winter and a really big, world class show.
Anywhere in Florida. 95% old white-hairs which is the typical coin show crowd anyway.
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

Wooooha! Did someone just say it's officially "TACO™" Tuesday????
Las Vegas
Easy to get to
No sales tax
No union shakedowns
Decent restaurant scene
Nice weather
Not prohibitively expensive

I'm a fan of Orlando.
Vegas. But I'm not a coin dealer. They would probably prefer a location with a more "gentrified" population.

I gotta say if they can't make one happen in Hotlanta(since it's my back door!) I'm a Fan of Orlando also. It's hard to beat Orlando....maybe the FUN folks and the ANA can work something out? Of all the cities I've done shows in...Orlando is the cheapest and always the best experience as a dealer!
The antidote is called “AC” plus common sense.
why is nothing major held in the interior of the Country?? logic probably says host it where the population is large, but I don't accept that. what about St. Louis, what about Memphis??
I hope not. The ANA has a habit of messing up any show they run. The Winter ANA show in Orlando a couple years ago was a huge disappointment,
I have mounted exhibits at the Winter and Summer FUN shows for many years. Given the ANA rules, I would not go near it. You have to drill a hole in your case in addition to some other draconian rules. Forget it!
I don’t think too many people on the right or left coast would be excited about going to Memphis or St. Louis. Nashville OTOH would be a great place.
Memphis is the pits! The SPMC was held in Memphis ,in June, for 40 years. I attended all of them. There is no large convention center or even a fourth of the needed hotel rooms downtown. It is one giant slum.
What's the definition of "national coin show"? Every big city has a big coin show.
Yea, the American Political Items Collectors (APIC) is going to hold their next national convention there. My wife and I were looking into attending. According to the travel guides, it’s hot as hell in the summer, the parking sucks and the access to the city is difficult if you are stuck in a location outside the city, which we would be. Since I am not a country music fan, that is not an attraction. It does not matter because the new Grand Old Oprey” is ten miles outside the city. PLUS the Tennessee sales tax is 8 1/2 % with no break for coins. I would pass.
LOL. I always think of Duck Soup.

Prosecutor: Something must be done. War would meant a prohibitive increase in our taxes.
Chicolini: Hey, I've got an uncle that lives in Taxes.
Prosecutor: No, I'm talking about taxes. Money. Dollars.
Chicolini: Dollas! There's-a where my uncle lives! Dollas, Taxes!
Las Vegas
I used to hate the Chicago ANA's but now that the area has built up more and it is so close to Ohare it sure makes sense. Most people can get to Share pretty easy and it is kind of central. I like Orlando but strong Fun shows would make it compete for a good show, also to far out of the way for a lot of people.
Chicago or Las Vegas

Depends on what your goal as the show promoter is.
If your primary goal is to make dealers happy and to maximize profit, then you should have it in a large city in a central location that is easy for dealers to get to/from like Chicago.
Alternatively, if your goal is to reach the most people possible and to educate people about this great hobby of ours, then you should rotate your annual show among major cities all over the country, some shows will be bigger and more popular, some shows will be smaller and weaker, but overall more people will be able to participate. Not too many collectors have the time and/or money to travel to the big shows each year.

So far, for the ANA shows that I have attended, Boston was my favorite.

Chicago gets my vote. Direct flight from anywhere, driveable from much of the Midwest, plenty of hotels and restaurants, good convention site, strong collector base, cultural and other side trips available, they know how to host large events...
LA area where the money is.
No one location will please everyone....Moving a large show between major population areas is the best option...that way collectors can choose to make a big trip or wait for a more 'local' show....Cheers, RickO
Most of y'all miss that nobody wants us. The ANA show is not a 'good' convention.
A 'good' convention is one that buys a lot of room nights from the associated hotels, has a big catered banquet and lots of other ancillary services (hospitality suites). Those are the ones that make money and attract lots of bids from the venues.
If I told you coin dealers had to rent rooms in the convention hotel instead of sleeping 3 to a room in the no-tel mo-tel down the street, you would laugh me off the board. But it's part of the reason the big cities and sites don't send bids.
Ask the ANA how many venues they sent the bid package to and how many responded. I think the last NMS had four bidders and that was a GOOD response.

Drill a hole in your case? What the heck for? Never heard of that! I will say I did the ANA spring show in Orlando and it was pitifully attended.
I think the show committee is always looking at attendance and ease of travel as a baseline. Rosemont, Ill. is a bit expensive for food and rooms but is convenient in every other way. I think major cities will always get the nod.
Anaheim? You do get Disneyland across the street and the rest of the SoCal stuff like traffic and more traffic 😬

Why not the best city in the good ole USA which is .....
San Diego.
Perfect climate, it is 64 degrees right now in the middle of August. Ocean water temperature now is 72 Degrees
Convention Center, Beaches, and the best Mexican food in the states
I know this city is not a coin destination, But it sure is a bitchen Big City.
Move the show around from city to city BUT!!!!!!
Try and dictate to the hotels much discounted rates for attendees.
there is absolutely no reason when a hotel get huge business for a few days that they should be allowed to raise their rates just to increase profits hugely for no other reason but greeeeeeed.
tot the contrary, attendees , and dealers should enjoy a 30-50 % discounts.
JMHO
Certainly not San Francisco, for multiple reasons.
