I've been on the forum for a little while, but mostly as an on-looker. By way of intro, I collect Southern gold with an interest in varieties, as listed in Doug Winter's books on the subject. I have a fairly thick skin, so feel free to critique my coin selections and opinions. I believe I have a good eye for spotting scarcer varieties of these gold coins, but I’m working to improve my ability to determine surface originality/proper toning.

Here is a photo of my most recent purchase - an 1839-D $2.50 Quarter Eagle, Winter 1-B (AU55), which is identified by the bold branch stem (the usual variety has only a portion of the branch visible) and die crack from the T in STATES to the eagle's eye. @BillJones has shared a photo of his in the same variety, which has appears to have a deeper toned color. Since it did not appear he was going to sell anytime soon, I picked up this one.
