I live in N.E. Tenn. I stand by my statement. In the early 80's
we started to get them in mid January.
I believe we're in agreement then, but your original statement of "between spring training and Opening Day" would exclude the month on January and most of February.
I was in Brooklyn, NY and I know I bought packs in late January every year I collected from 1974-1980. But maybe it took some time for them to get to TN, no idea there.
Baseball cards were definitely released in January each year. I remember buying packs as soon as they came in and opening them while watching the NFL playoffs.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

In all seriousness it is worth mentioning that long time dealer Wayne Johnson will not be at The National as he passed away this winter. I believe his family will be setting up and continuing the legacy.
That is sad news. Wayne was always one of the gentlemen of the hobby.
