Theyre coming out the woodwork now. Someone is selling their collection/hoard.
No wonder why they've practically disappeared from the market. Now its flood time

Anyone ever seen a 78-CC or later date proof only? That would be interesting! It would be along the lines of a HOBO 18/17-D Buffalo Nickel I was shown that would've graded AU!
I guess if you've always wanted one, now's a good chance to choose among several.

Lots of choices if you're looking for one !!!
This is the only 78cc opium box I know of for sale....
Crusty that’s a 78 obverse paired with a 73 or 74 reverse. So it’s a “78-cc” but not really.
Interesting pieces, but not my collecting "cup of tea"... at $400. If that price is realized, I can see another potential venue for counterfeiting.

Prices too high. Seller can keep them.
I would not spend that much money on one of those.... likely find one at a flea market or antique shop for considerably less.... Cheers, RickO
sometime in late 2008 early 2009 my boss purchased a collection of about 25 pieces.
Have they been checked to see if there is an opium residue? Might be interesting getting pulled over at the airport.
I have to believe that is an "old wives tale." The amount of opium you could smuggle in a silver dollar is negligible.
I think it is much more believable that these were used as is shown in the above photo...as a locket.

Echoing what @OriginalDan said above, these were made with two Trade Dollars each. Referring to any of these as genuine representatives of their specific date and mint would be incorrect.
People call these "opium dollars" but the listings are a completely different item. The items listed above are more commonly referred to as "locket dollars", usually containing an old portrait.
Opium dollars would be similar in that they are hollowed out to conceal opium. Very different purpose than the items listed above.
Everyone I know and myself included call them "Box Dollars".
Sure, box dollars works too. But to think that these hollowed out coins with photos also hid someones poppy stash is silly.
The 78-P listed is a Proof only date/mint. I don't think it is a proof plus obviously over-graded
