Awesome Avatars!

Do any of you really pay attention to the Avatars of others? I mean, most of us post a coin that might be special to us, or that we think will impress others, or maybe some other significant picture, during our setup. But, after that, do you even think about the Avatars or look at the Avatars of others when you’re reading the posts and responses? I do….sometimes. Every now and then, one will catch my eye, and I just HAVE to click on it and look at it a little closer up!

Many Avatars are of coins, and some are beautiful! Gonna applaud some of you for having beautiful coin Avatars (just a few that I noticed – not an exhaustive list by any means): @Chris H821, @Dave99B , @dpoole (is that coin really that blue?), @kbbpll (I want that dime!), @Kyle (I want that dime, too!), @PCGSPhoto, @PhilLynott, @Walkerfan, @BAJJERFAN, @JonBrand83, @RockyMtnProspector, @JJM.

I will not single out people for the below, but I might DM you to find out more!

Some Avatars are of coins I have no idea what they are, and I will eventually have to DM the person to learn more about the coins they are showing.

Some are non-coin related, and are interesting or funny!

Some are thought-provoking.

Some make me wonder, “What the..…WHAT??????”

Often I look at the avatar and recognize the poster before I see the name.

I removed my Kennedy Half Dollar avatar when I completed my eight coin silver short set. I now have a Franklin Half Dollar avatar as I’m now working through the (34) coin circulated FBL set. So you may see this one for awhile. The picture is a proof only because it looks cool. 😎

Stunning coin @JonBrand83 and simply beautiful @BAJJERFAN !!!!! I have gotten to recognize many of you by just your avatar and when they change I go a little crazy. There is one avatar that always gets my attention....I'll have to find him and put it in here when I do, I forgot who he is right now...but his avatar stands out...

My avatar is with me 24/7....so could not be on the forum without it... and since it also represents my professional field of expertise, it is highly representative. I suppose I should have a set of grips made with inlaid coins... Cheers, RickO

I used to have a very colorful, high grade 1921 D, as my avatar. I liked it, because I felt that it symbolized striving for the best and beautiful eye appeal. I eventually took it down, because I felt that I wasn't being original or true to myself, because it wasn't mine. I later found out that it was part of the #1 Forsythe collection and was a MS 66.

I then decided to post my own 1921 D MS 64, because I felt it was a worthy representative, in and of itself, and I was being more individual and unique. I bought it because of its unusually strong luster. I sent it back in to NGC for regrading and high resolution imaging. The grade stayed the same but I got these beautiful photographs.

It's not my most favorite coin, because I have many, but it is certainly right up there with my best.

Interesting topic! Yes, my Avatar, if nobody ever heard my story was a total surprise. The Morgan Dollar shown was given to me and my 4 other siblings (1 different Morgan for each of us) in which my father self engraved our names and birthdays. With My Dollar, I decided to try to have PCGS grade my "Dad's Dollar". There was no way I thought our Host would consider it. Knowing it has been sort of damaged from my father carving into it. Well, I was wrong! Our wonderful Host followed through with my request. They even allowed to title my coin with the words I asked to place on the slab, "Dad's Dollar". Thank You, PCGS! Here is the whole picture of the coin.

Mine is a cover for the 1901 Pan-American expo. It features (what else?) a bison. I think I've had four different ones in the 17 years I've been here.

Yep, it really was that blue! Those 3CNs toned up nicely, a lot of them, because of the sulphur in the paper they were sold/stored in back then.

That coin was a 66CAM that Andy Skrabalak sold for me on consignment in 2005. Made smoe money, but I still miss it!

That is a really cool story, and a great memory of your dad!! Good on PCGS to actually slab it that way for you!

No, I don't know the back history about your Avatar. Please do tell! The pic caught my eye, so I put it on the list.

That's what I figured, since you can't see the date. Perhaps the only time I took a decent picture of a coin.
My "great contribution" to numismatics was the documentation of a third Barber dime reverse design, introduced in 1900. In conjunction with that research, SF actually kept the 1892-1899 reverse design in service in 1900 (probably a single die). So my avatar is this 1900-S "old reverse" transition anomaly, which is quite difficult to find in decent condition (and which nobody really knows or cares about). I guess my avatar is now shameless self-promotion then, huh.

You're right OP, checking out other Avatars are fun! The certain one that really gets me is the one with some sort of little black "bug" actively crawling on the area of the Avatar. I can't recall who's Avatar it is. Maybe, he'll show up or someone else knows who this belongs to?

Hey, that's pretty cool! I've never been much of a Barber fan. Not that I despise them like some do. I do have some Barber coinage, but I've just concentrated elsewhere. I did not know about the different reverses. So, I'm glad you're self-promoting, because I'm learning something new today. And, I'll have to do a little more digging into this, and learn even more! Do you have an article/report on the different reverses that you wrote as a founder of the third design? So, are these different reverses valued differently in the real world? I don't see anything called out in the PCGS Price List. Now I wanna go back and dig out my Barber Dimes to see if I have any of the different reverse designs!

See, you post a silly post about Avatars, and you end up learning something that excites you about some coins you have that you didn't really pay much attention to! This is why this forum is so cool!!!

You are correct. Technically, they can be called "icons", or just "profile pictures", as stated when you first sign on here. I know at CoinTalk, they're called Avatars (they do pull up a little profile widget-y thing when clicked on). In the end, it's semantics to me, so I'll call it whatever anyone wants - I'm not picky about it.
