GTG 1915 $10 Indian

Here are the photos of the coin before I sent it in to PCGS. I do not agree with the grade that was returned. I am curious what your thoughts are....

55; you will see a lot of gold coins especially you think have a good shot at Unc. grade 55 or 58 at PCGS.

It is a beat up AU. Hard to tell what AU to rate it as there is minimal rub but lots of marks. Book grade AU typical= 50; however, only a tiny amount of rub = AU-58 but NOT choice. Blame the ANA for this nonsense!

Nevertheless, I'm going to guess it will come back in a 61 slab.

How does one know which that type of photo?

Simple the marks are obvious - very baggy.
The loss of luster on the high points is obviously from friction wear (dull change of color) rather than "stacking."

I guessed an AU in a 61 holder. I sincerely hope I'm wrong on this one. I think the excessive marks will sway the graders toward AU.

AU58 is what it came back as. You all confirmed that PCGS was correct. I was hoping for an MS but it is baggy as mentioned. The lighting I used for the photos really brought that out. It is a beauty in hand!

The bag marks don't make it AU. Even MS coins can be bag marked. It's AU because of light high-point wear and the luster disturbance in the fields. It's still a very nice coin.

    AU-55, perhaps AU-58.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The OP already said it came back from PCGS graded AU58.

Baggy does not look like the issue to me. There is a fair amount of rub in the fields, especially on the obverse. PCGS graded this one MS-63. It might serve to show you the difference.

@ilmcoins Did PCGS Photograph the subject coin as part of your submission service?

If so, it would be instructive to also view those photos as part of this discussion.

Absolutely correct: The ONLY thing that can make a coin AU is friction wear (unless you are a very knowledgeable copper whizz who uses "Net" grading.) However, it is a proven fact that AU coins with very nice surfaces often get a bump to MS. An old time dealer told me that when he was on the line AU/MS the condition of the surface was very important in his decision.

Late to the game, but 58 was my impression for exactly the reasons that Perry Hall enumerated.
