Hey Tim, I know you were hoping for a PSA 2 on your card, and it’s a totally awesome example, but I think you’re right to try hard not to focus on the grade. The fact that it’s slabbed and preserved with any number grade at all..... that should be the main focus. You know I love this card and your PM project as a whole. Congrats on getting that one authenticated and preserved! So awesome!
Thanks for the kind words.
The ‘number’ given by a TPG grader is becoming more and more meaningless by the day to me at this point. Oddly enough, I originally planned on putting all of these into PSA slabs. That’s not going to happen anytime soon now, if at all.
I intend to research how other TPGs handle crossovers - and the success rate - as a result of this most recent experience since, objectively and in hand, Ted, Stan and Mel all seem pretty well over-graded to me. Look more like 2s and 3s to me...

Tim, I had no idea you had such an extensive collection of Montiels. Who gives a bunny's poop what the grade came back as. That will look quite handsome in the PSA slab with all of those other cards. That's an incredible collection, congrats!

And to be clear, while I was rooting for a 1.5 or 2, I was fully expecting a 1. I don't have any issues with this grade - at all. The 2's previously posted are much cleaner and neater than mine - better printed border, more minor stains and were clearly cut much better to produce much better corners. (And I intentionally stayed away from the word trimmed because these are hand cut cards with some allowable variation in border size.)
In my estimation, this card was assigned the correct PSA grade (not that my opinion of their opinion matters). But, I also think it is quite exceptional looking for a poor card. And what I know is that it is more valuable, more liquid and it will look more attractive in the PSA holder than it did raw.
I try to be pretty matter of fact and objective with cards; they're supposed to be fun on some level, after all. It's an expensive hobby, at times, but my former hobby was drinking alcohol.
This is cheaper.
Considerably.

Thanks, Arthur!
It's a really fun set to go after that is loaded to the gills with star power of both the active and retired kind but the issues date (1946-47) means there's a great collection of players to tap into and feature in the set. Throw in that its from pre-Castro Cuba (don't forget his connections to the major leagues as a Senators farm hand) at a time when celebrities, gangsters, gamblers, hustlers and tourists were hopping puddle jumpers to party the weekend away in Havana?
Well, the overlap of baseball history, world history and card collecting meant this set would become more than something I would just admire from afar.
And on top of all that, it contains the first issued card of Stan Musial ?
C'mon - what could be more fun than that!!!!!

In the quest for information I often see this old thread. Things have changed - I’m going for all 180 now, not just major league baseball players. A lot of time has passed and the next few weeks we’ll need more fun stuff here on the forums.
So for today, here’s an update of set progress beginning with the boxers that start the set:

I wonder how many cards have Medwick's original nickname like that: "Ducky Wucky". I've heard that '30s nicknames were softened by the war because it just wasn't fitting to refer to war heroes by names like Ducky Wucky.

Perhaps he should have embraced it more himself! How many people outside of Cardinals fans (and crazy baseball fans) even know what a stud Joe Medwick was; he is the last NL player to win the Triple Crown and most people go ‘Who?’
He preferred Muscles Medwick to Ducky but anyone who saw him run couldn’t help but notice the waddle!

There’s just such a great checklist within this set’s first hundred cards. The combined boxers and ball players leads to some fun research as you encounter names you’ve heard but don’t know much about; I really just got started on the set with the intention of getting the Yankees but they grow on you pretty fast with their uniquely beautiful and simple design. Pretty soon I just started grabbing everything I could find that was reasonably priced - mostly auction wins.
Again, it’s a tough set to try to chase as you’ll go months at a time with no new examples surfacing. And competition for stars has gotten fierce. The Musial card is not one I could afford any longer (without taking out another mortgage) if I hadn’t acquired it when I did; one of the best gets of my collecting career and really attributed to good fortune, mostly.

It doesn’t get bumped all that often because copies from the set just never show up.
Sometimes it’s been a year or more between pickups for my set despite searching all the time. I don’t really care about being number one or anything. I’ve only had a few key cards graded and mostly for protection as these are fragile as can be. I would like to complete this set though I’m not totally sure that’s even possible. The Oswald Bluege card potentially doesn’t exist despite having a place in the album. I have seen several albums with these cards pasted into the album (that seemed to be how many kids in Latin and South America saved their collections; in albums sometimes affiliated with the company, like these PMs and Topps Venezuelans). The Bluege is either empty or filled with the Gabby Hartnett card (which always has a Bill Dickey back) and there is no spot for Hartnett in the album. 🤔
It’s a pretty fun set, though: a who’s who of baseball and boxing, history to present, in 1946.
