Probably cleaned at some point and then naturally re-toned. It is not unusual in that regard.
The scrapes to the left of the arm are also an issue.
I think this coin would have buyers if it were priced as a typical VF.
Of course it has better details than that, but would need to be downgraded a little.

I was curious cause I saw a pcgs video that a scratch that's toned over that it would usually take a grade or 2 off but wouldn't necessarily make a scratched grade as long as it's not a new fresh scratch,, that's why I asked you guys,, what grade would you maybe land it near so I can decide if it should be protected

I'm into it at an XF 40 price, so if it's even a 50 or higher I think it's worth it

    I would keep for awhile.

I think too much obverse damage for a straight 50.

I think that it might get ”AU sharpness, scratched.”

If it was cleaned, as mentioned, probably an old one and has retoned. I'm not an expert with grading standards, but the scratch doesn't look bad enough to bodybag to me, just cut the grade down.

I think it would probably straight grade with the obverse ding being the deciding factor. It might slide by.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

The obverse scratches are the limiting factor... might get 'details'... only way to be sure is to send it in... It is a gamble, your decision. Let us know what you do...Cheers, RickO

IMO. That’s more than a simple “scratch” that’s a “gouge.”

No toning will cover that up. And anything added to cover that up is unethical.

    Like I said.

    IMO

Definitely cleaned and the gouge is very visible. No straight grade unfortunately. I would save the submission money for another piece

    @SilverEagle420

IMO = In My Opinion; there are variants

I did not mean to imply you would add something to fill the gouge.

After reading about nose grease, putty, smoke, AT, and all the weird things some collectors/dealers have done (doing?) one is always on the lookout.

Old saying, let the buyer beware.

Better saying, as a buyer be knowledgeable and aware.

I've seen a lot less severe scratches/gouges get details holdered than this coin.

The old cleaning doesn't bug me... the scratches/gouges in the obverse field does. Old cleanings sometimes temper with age, the scratches won't go away...

Much to think about, but I would likely get more for it raw

By the way, does anyone else think that coin looks WRONG?

Look at the hand on the shield and the bottom of the hair.

Yup, but just bad pics of a cleaned coin.. and that's not a scratch, that's not a gouge, that's a trench :s
