Cool Garvey stuff. I love seeing those 71's in such nice condition. As for the side-track Garvey HOF subject, I will say this, the stat measure referenced above by Bill James has Rickey Henderson and Robinson Cano with the same score, and Sam Crawford worse than Jimmy Rollins, so to me that metric has little to no value. I do agree that comparing players from different eras is silly. Which is what I just did
Twenty five years ago I bought this Garvey from a doctor who showed up with some of the nicest stuff. His prices were high, but I managed to walk away with two 71 Garvey’s. Some of the nicest I have seen. Sent this one out and it came back in just a plain white envelope with no protection. I think it came out fantastic.
Here's several of the cards, now graded by SGC. Of course, I'd rather have them in PSA slabs, and when PSA starts grading these issues, I'm sure I'll get 'em crossed over. But for now...
Back in '89 as Cal Ripken Jr. was climbing the list for most consecutive games played, I decided to make my own postal cachets and have them signed (similar to what Gateway Stamp was doing).
Here is a cachet I had postmarked in Baltimore (the date that Cal passed Garvey), added a sticker and some typed copy and then had it signed by both:

I take exception to that 76 Team issue photo, only because it shows him in a 1969 image. I suppose it could have been issued later, but I kind of doubt it was that much later. I have all of the different team issued photos, but I still don't have any actual proof of the years issued. The Dodgers sold those 20 photo packs at the stadium year after year (you can see them advertised in the souvenir brochures) and it seems apparent that they blurred the years together, especially when there were no significant personnel changes. I'd have to go back and check to be exact, but Garvey has 6-7 different, issued between around 1971-82. I say around 71, because I doubt they would have included him before then. Topps, Dell and Ticketron all got him early on, but it seems not much else was issued besides his annual Topps card until around 74, his breakout year. This includes the 8x10 team issued player photos, that are also nearly impossible to date to a specific year.
Obviously not a new one issued each year, but which images were used in which years first is a mystery to me.
I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

I have not wanted to make the investment of having all of my postcards/team issues and oddball items graded but I've got to admit those all look great in the holders.
Collecting anything and everything relating to Roger Staubach
I just acquired the 1980 Garvey/Carew Long Beach newspaper card that stevegarveyfan showcased earlier. It was a major gap in my collection that is finally filled. He might even share a few of the things he got in trade, once they arrive, although not sure they can be graded at this time. I guess we'll see.

Yours is correctly labeled. The one stevegarveyfan posted is mislabeled. The 1981 FBI discs did not have the copyright information on them, whereas the 1982 discs did.
I don't think I have ever shared this one since obtaining it. I just noticed tonight that is is also missing the facsimile signature. The "original" blackless card, although I'm sure there are older examples of missing black ink.

Steve Garvey made an appearance this way a couple years ago & a local photographer had these business cards made up for the occasion...If anyone is interested in one, DM me:

I saw one of those Ryan/Garvey cards sell on ebay maybe a year or two ago, maybe longer. Time sort of blends together now days. it went for around $100, too steep for my taste, especially with Garvey being the back card. It didn't have the color shift that one has though. Those are cool cards.

I am looking for the 2005 Studio Portraits White-Black & white Steve Garvey card (any serial #). It’s like the bottom card in this pic except it has a black & white portrait. I have several others in this set to trade with. Please let me know if anyone can help. Thanks.

Thought I'd get this thread going again...

Nice. If you had included a Garvey image, I'd have to have one. Thank you for not doing it, as it is a 1/1 I could not have owned!

The Dodger photographer did this for me...1981
Here are the three of them I made back in '89...The Joe Sewell is cool as he passed away about a year later.
I have some extra postmarked envelopes if you want to make your own Garvey.....

That's an incredible piece!
That's beautiful!
That is a cool piece.
1985 Spring Training program with crazy big and hurried Garvey signature and Tony Gwynn below the team.
And my 2 favorite Garvey autographed cards:
Both very nice cards.

1982 Montreal News Steve Garvey
Is the writeup from the Beckett big book or Standard Guide? I've never seen these identified like this before.
It was an old Beckett Annual Guide. Not even sure they are listed anymore.
Just back from PSA
Nice, How much did it set you back for the rare disc?
I won't divulge the exact price, but I'll say that it was nowhere near what I probably SHOULD have had to pay.
I'll probably never locate one...lol
The Garvey Gear tag is also pretty cool. Never seen one before... Nice hair Mr. Garvey!
Mine is mislabeled. Uncovered it looking for something recently and figured I'd let it see the light of day again. 1981 FBI Disc, labeled as 1982.
Or do I have it backwards? I know I have both discs, but this one does say 1982 on it.
Looks like yours is mislabeled and is the 81 version. The hunt continues for 82 now.
