I'd vote counterfeit. It has fake toning, not evenly applied and partially rubbed off the reverse, covering mildly granular surfaces that don't appear to be silver.
Counterfeit
Can't put a finger on it but it's not got the correct look. Perhaps a VAM-2 but I agree with above that it's a fake.

Looks like a real VAM 4. Kind of trashed, but real. Abused Morgans, which are plentiful, can take on all sorts of weird looks.

Pat, check the weight and do a "ring" test. my hunch is that it's light and has a thud-sound. we see more fakes than real coins to the point that I don't even entertain any sellers any more. it probably weighs around 22-23 grams. the downside on 89-CC's isn't worth the risk.
this one looks NG.
The trouble authenticating these things based on photographs is that the fake ones are the illegitimate children of genuine coins. Therefore the fact that they match up with a known variety might only mean that they were made from well executed copy dies.
The other possibility is that it's a sandwich coin made from two real ones.

More fake stuff.... the market is flooded it seems.... Caveat emptor.... Cheers, RickO
Do you have a photo of the edge or third side of that coin?
Looks like what's coming out of China these days.

Let's withhold a judgment pending a report as to the weight. Let's complete a reasonable investigation before claiming it's a counterfeit.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
It just doesn't look right. The coloration looks very artificial.
Weight is close enough to be within limits
No edge photo
Looks cleaned to a fault and exergue is rough. IMO. Peace Roy

It just doesn’t feel right
Or have a natural look in hand
Looks genuine, but with environmental damage and then harshly cleaned.
The date position did not match a graded one
Is there more than one date position?
Yes
