CSNS Show Report

Coin shows are great, even when they are just OK. As I read other CSNS reports I wonder, what else would these people rather be doing today... certainly not being at work.
I woke up at 5am, popped on the Nespresso and grabbed a quick shower preparing myself for the 3 hour drive to the north side of Chicago through the traffic and toll roads surrounding the city. I listened to "The Peoples History of the United States" along the way, a fascinating books if you have the time. Arriving at the convention center at 8:30 I spent an hour lot viewing the US $5's and the Latin American portions of the sale with the hope that at least one lot stuck out to me as a MUST BUY, but alas nothing. Only one coin seemed nice enough but I actually already had a nicer piece so not a bid placed for me.
As an aside, I started collecting coins in 2006 and dove pretty far into the deep end right off the bat after a trip to Dahlonega with collecting rare date gold, a literal mine field for an advanced collector but a nuclear war for the completely unexperienced and unsupported new collector. As per usual for me, the gold section of the sale was completely unacceptable. Brightened, lightened, hairlines, blah. Today I collect mostly Latin American type three reasons: 1) Coins are still available in MS and completely original (US collectors should study world coins for what proper surfaces should look like, 2) I can be the best or near the best in some fields vs. paying $25k for a mid-grade rare gold piece 3) I have dealer friends in this space who make the hobby fun (I also do in rare gold thanks to Doug and Irma).
I made my way to the world section of the show and quickly scanned the tables, seeing a few coins which were interesting but not all there for me. Along the way seeing my friend @MrEureka who is the best of the best in what I collect. I made my way to @CoinRaritiesOnline and saw my friend John and picked up my recent purchases and saw @Regulated to show off a few coins and get some expert advice.
I spent my day looking for three things: 1) Awesome Latin American type, 2) Anything from my hometown of Kalamazoo, 3) original rare date gold. In the end I added 1 (and after an email 2) 1/2R's which are basically the best examples extant for two Latin series, 5 tokens from Kalamazoo, MI, 0 pieces of rare gold aside from the eBay purchase which landed in my mailbox as I got home for a super nice P45+ New Orleans $5.
Along the way I spent good time with the afore mentioned dealers, saw @fishteeth which is always awesome, and chatted one dealer who I know well from local activities who displayed his eclectic collection of Hawaiian material including the original printing plates for the currency.
For me this hobby is about seeing and buying coins and making good friends and I bought a few pieces and saw some friends so all around a great trip.
A few pieces for fun I picked up at the show:

Thanks @Boosibri for your upbeat show report. Refreshing.
Great report!!! Sounds like a really fun time...thanks for sharing!!! Beautiful newps.
Great report, B - thank you. And ditto on the "Brightened, lightened, hairlines, blah" when it comes to early (1795 - 1834) and branch mint gold... unfortunately, so many have been ruined.
Thanks for the report, I enjoyed reading it. 3 great looking coins posted!
Just looked at your Latin America digital album. Simply awesome!
That South Peru 8 reales is fantastic. I love the imagery - looks like a postcard or tourist poster on the reverse. But not sure I have ever seen one that nice!
My current "Box of 20"
Sorry I missed you there. Thanks for the report.
Wonderful report.

...you mean the "vast majority" have been ruined
Wow, wish you could post the plates for the Hawaii currency
Great report Brian! Love the Colombia 8!!!

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Nice report! Right with you on the gold. Very frustrating to find any original material....
Those are some great coins. Didn't find anything for my collection but had a great time talking to dealers and collectors.
Is it snowing there yet?
Man I love that Cuzco 8 r..... it would make a perfect mate to the 8 escudo piece I bought yesterday at the show......
Nice Latn American pieces. The Potosi 4 Reales caught my eye, but the other pieces are amazing too. If I had to choose, it would be a real Sophie's choice.
How we're the exhibis, with the new exorbitant charges to collectors?
Liked that Colombia 8 too. Brian I have a 1970's Gibson Gospel guitar with Kalamazoo label inside .....made of mahogany!
Interested?

LIBERTY SEATED DIMES WITH MAJOR VARIETIES CIRCULATION STRIKES (1837-1891) digital album
The South Peru could use more design elements.
I have one, too.
It’s reverse reminds me of the packed in design of the Texas Commem reverse. Not a millimeter of space left

You were there boiler?
I did not know he collects world coins.

Doesn't matter.
Nice report! Coin shows are what you make them out to be. Even if you don't find what you are looking for, it's still time among coins and looking at them. Some of the bitter people on this forum would very likely find fault with the cutest puppy too - complain about his breath, the tail might be QC, one ear is slightly off center and so on.

I did attend Central States and I am happy I did. I have been looking for the Cuzco 8r and 8e coins for several years. The handful of 8 escudo coins that I've looked at (up to this past Friday) all had striking/planchet or cleaning/damage issues and the 8r in mint state seems to be just as difficult. I'll keep looking for the 8 r........
I'm not a true world coin collector but I am drawn to several of the Central and South American issues.
Thanks for the excellent show report..... and I have also had a growing interest in world coins... seems I have been looking at them more and more over the past nine months or so... might be time for me to 'give birth' to that area of collecting.... particularly the gold and silver pieces....Cheers, RickO
This was one of those just OK shows ? Sounds like you were able to make lemonade out of a lemon. This was the first year I didn't go in 5 or 6 years ( as long as they've been holding it there). I did a dry run in my mind and couldn't get myself to go even though it's only about a 45 minute drive. Spent Thursday night at the Marc Martel concert it was awesome and made missing a lemon coin show irrelevant.
Very nice report. There is almost always a positive to any coin show. Some things are just a bonus.
That is a great piece. Looks like it is "all there." I have found memories of Cuzco, which archeologically speaking, is the Latin American Cairo.
Congrats on another great pickup and excellent show report!

Nice report....sorry I missed this year.
@Boosibri An excellent thread/report. I was hooked immediately with the mention of Howard Zinn's "The Peoples History of the United States". An assigned read for me in college. Still have it. "Fasinating" might be an understatement considering today's climate of..........
Nice report... Sounds like a great day!
