Gobrecht dollars have been the subject of several discussions here. Does the article alter any prior thoughts on the subject?

This is a very interesting article. In a way it makes me glad that I did not shell out a five figure sum for an 1838 or ‘39 Gobrecht Dollar. I was tempted a couple of the times. Knowing that they are all restrikes has lowered my interest in them.

It was also most informative to read why the beautiful flying eagle design was passed over for the reverse of the Seated Dollar. It did not strike up well on the new steam driven presses.

@BillJones Re the striking difficulties: I am currently reading the book 1849: The Philadelphia Mint Strikes Gold by Moran and Garrett and it makes the exact same point and has pictures. Plus the book is excellent--well written and fascinating to read of the politics and practical issues that bedeviled the mint in its first 60 years of existence. I strongly recommend the book as a fun and educational read.

Can’t read it, apparently. But in the past I’ve thought others’ theories to be more accurate than his.
