Is this trade dollar authentic?

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,112 ✭✭✭✭✭

I need a trade dollar for my type set and saw this one on eBay. I'm no trade dollar expert and I know there are a lot of fakes out there. Can you tell if this is real or not? TIA

It looks genuine, but every time I looked at it I would see those light scratches in the obverse field.

It actually looks like it could be counterfeit. I don't like the way the fields look. There's also something off about the bottom of the obverse.

Looks real to me, and if you don’t mind a VF with scratches, that’s about as cheap as they come these days.

The relief does look a bit shallow in the center of the obv….could be the pics.

Yeah, hard to tell. The angle could be responsible for what I'm seeing.

Photo looks like a genuine coin. I see other things in this sellers listings that would make me avoid. You might not get the coin in the photos. Several red flags in my eyes, buy at your own risk.

Images are not crisp enough but I am always suspicious when I see parallel lines across a coin. In the field next to AMERICA on this one.

I'd find a slabbed example, even if breaking it out for an album... Then you have some assurance.

Authenticity aside, that coin looks like it's been cleaned and has rather uneven color. You shouldn't have to pay much more for a more appealing example (and a slabbed one, at that).

The OP coin looks genuine-ish, but with issues. Trade Dollars and Seated Dollars have been counterfeited enough that I'm looking for a slab bed specimen for my type set...

Mustard? I would describe it more like "Nauseous Green".

Agree with others. No reason to chase this one.

If it were $25-$50 cheaper and your weren't very discriminating.....maybe. But it isn't and you should be.

Something not quite right about the coin. Maybe just a bad cleaning.

The photo is not good enough to say yea or ney on this one. Like some others, I see reasons to think that it is real, and then other aspects of the image make me think the other way. The Trade Dollar is one of those types, perhaps THE type that most collectors should only buy certified. Buy a certified piece and crack it out if you have to do that.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

There are currently a few VF details slabbed examples on eBay for $160-$180 and if you keep looking, an XF/AU details slabbed example can be had in that same price range (a few have sold for that and more should show up via auction or buy-it-now).

I've certainly seen some at recent shows. I can't give as satisfying an answer as "here you go," but they are out there... might just take some looking (easier said than done).
