Wheat Cent Question(s)

Hey everyone I have a question for you guys. It has been a long time since I have posted on here but since my last post my kids have been doing more digging for coins and finding some that will complete their cent folders.

My question though is $3.50 a good price for a roll of Wheat cents?
I was at an antique store the other day and was going to grab them for my kids but was not sure if that was a good price or not.
Also what do you look for when you buy a roll like that?

Just trying to help the kiddos complete their folders with some missing wheat cents.

Why not? Some spend more than that on a cup of latte and nothing to show for it except trips to the bathroom.

IMO, I would get it for your aspiring YNs. Unless they will let you open the roll you take your chances. Let the kiddo’s be the one to open it up but ham it up... looking for that elusive whatever cent they are hunting for.

And welcome back to the forums @Brutalfly!

If you're patient, you can probably get some for about 3 cents each.

I know a couple of dealers that would probably pay a little more than that. It's always been a given to me that 3 cents is the least I could wholesale Wheaties for...the problem is the logistics.

I have bought solid date wheat rolls for much less than that on eBay, but then again there is shipping.

If the coins are a decent mix and if they are not corroded or damaged, it is probably $3.50 well spent for the kids. If they are having fun with it then you can shop around for a better price next time.

$3.50 is not a good price for average circirculated condition wheat cents. Wheat cents are just common coins that are available by the millions. If you find them in an antique store you can be fairly certain they are overpriced.

They may be fun for the kids to look through because they are really old by their standards ... but ... the chance of their finding anything more than common dates is remote.

    All glory is fleeting.

Searching for cents to fill albums has been the starting point for many collectors... As to the price of wheat cent rolls... Well, that is not bad... just do not expect to find any '55 DDO's,.... ;) What I mean is, they have probably been checked for major varieties,... Cheers, RickO

I always tried to convince the adult to mix the wheats in with a batch of cents. Allow the child to 'discover' the neat coins. It helps to feed the fever a bit.

$3.50 is affordable and helps the seller keep the doors open.

I can't believe the number of people here who think 7 cents per coin is a good price on a role. I'll sell you half a bag for 4 cents each including shipping. Wholesale price on wheats is currently a little under 3 cents per coin. Retail price on a bag is around 4 cents per coin ($200 per bag). That has to be a special roll to be worth $3.50

Sure, you could check around for a better price but how much time and effort do you really want to put into saving a buck or so?

Kind of reminds me of some driving their cars around for an extra 20-30 miles to find that gas station that has the lower price by 1C. :D

Thank you everyone for your comments and advice.
    I do appreciate them.
I went back to pick up a roll yesterday and as a walked in a gentleman and his wife were leaving.
I looked and saw that all 3 rolls had been sold and some other coins.
I asked up front and the woman said that the person I passed while walking in bought them.
She informed me the booth they were in normally gets restocked on Tuesday so I will go back and look next Tuesday to see if there is anything else.
I know the my kiddos will enjoy them if I am able to get some. They need to pick up a few more state park quarters and when we go to the store as a family they are always looking for coins.
