A little help with my "Body Bagged" Trade Dollar

rln_14rln_14 Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭

Hello, with one of my free submissioons, I tried submitting my 1876 S Trade Dollar, came back as "86 - Authenticity Unverifiable". Kinda wondering why?? It has chopmarks which leads me to believe it is Genuine. I know it is cleaned, but i wanted to see if they would attribute Type II/II to the coin, Also, I posted pics of this coin previously and one of our fellow forum members said it was a Micro S, Any thoughts as to why it got "86'd" would be appreciated. thanks for your help

Even if real it is scrubbed and an inconsistent strike esp by the wheat and bails. I would just move on as convincing others will never pay off.

That said I don’t see anything that point absolutely fake

So badly cleaned they didn’t want to touch it. Use it as a pocket piece for a year and resubmit

Maybe they question the authenticity of the chop marks? I don't know the first thing about chop marks but the coin looks real

Harshly cleaned an very unappealing. Is it real ... I have no idea but the fact that PCGS wouldn't authenticate it is not a good sign. Don't spend any more money on it. Just avoid coins like it in the future.

The piece is so severely cleaned that it is impossible to discern exactly what it was like when the piece was new. The grading services have been burned a number of times by counterfeits that were cleaned in order to hide the defects that existed on the original surfaces. Not all of these “improperly cleaned” fakes have been dark. Some of the certified fake silver pieces were as bright as this one.

In addition the black stuff near the stars on the right side looks suspiciously like the “shoe polish” type stuff that the Chinese use to darken their products. Also a couple of the “chop marks” look fake. The “Y” on the reverse and the especially the “H” on the obverse look suspicious. I don’t blame PCGS for passing on trying to authenticate this piece. There is too much going on with it to give it the benefit of the doubt.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I agree with what BillJones said. Is it about the right weight? A closeup of the edge reeding would also be helpful in authentication.

I would question those chop marks. While not an expert myself, I have checked my reference material (Rose) and see nothing like them. Cheers, RickO

A coin like that has no chance of either being graded or of you ever getting your fees back. Join a coin club. Ask before you waste more money on "grading."

What BillJones said, the surface is too harshly cleaned to tell authenticity. Id have to see the coin in hand to say anything conclusive about the chops, I have concerns with the obverse chops.

If I had to guess, though, I'd say real. Guessing just isn't enough for PCGS

Folks expect TPGS's to be experts. Trouble is, the fakes are getting so deceptive that a harsh cleaning makes everything look counterfeit! Plus, no one can tell a deceptive fake from an image. You could try for a second opinion as it will be hard to sell a coin as yours w/o certification.

Even if real, I wouldn't spend another cent trying to get it certified. It has enough issues that make it not worth the effort nor $$. Find a nice, already certified one if you really want a Type II/II in plastic. Now, if that pesky little "S" was not on the reverse, a different story...

Can chop marks really be authenticated? Harshly cleaned coins just add to the loss of credibility. IMO. Peace Roy

Keep it in your pocket for a year and it will become real

Has the coin been weighed, and if so, what is the weight?

For those of you still interested with this topic, the coin just weighed in at 27.1 grams

  • It looks real to me, but likely scrubbed with a wire brush at some point. It will take more than a year to wear away the damage caused by the harsh cleaning. I have an 1874-P Trade $ that was deemed as unverifiable authenticity once that later made it into a PCGS holder, so there is a chance it could holder at some point. IMO it would not be worth the cost to continue sending it in.
