I found my 1870-S dime. Just got it back from PCGS. I bought it as an NGC MS61 and it came back as a PCGS AU58. I don't care which grade is right, I love it. These are so hard to find in an unmolested state. Total PCGS population is 92 coins and about half of those are what some would call puke. I'm so happy to have this one.

Every single S mint dime and half dime before 1873 is very tough in problem free grades. 90% of the population is mutilated.

So just where is the cut off ? What coins can have rub with a mint state grade like Bust coins can have ? Barber coins cannot have friction right ?

My 1866 Philly Mint Set
Wow, total mintage 50k. Quite a find!
In top pop, there are several MS66's. Those are five figure coins and they don't fit in my VF-AU collection so I don't consider those personally. In general mint state examples of many seated dimes are easier to find than unharmed circulated examples and the 1870-S is no exception. As for rarity, I've seen maybe five circulated examples show up for sale in the past few years. One I got blown out of the water on, and the others I found undesirable. This is definitely in the top five most difficult dates to find. The "key date" '71-'74 CC's are positively easy compared to the really scare dates, though the prices don't reflect that.
