The reason that HK-222 is often found in beautiful high grades & often DPL or ultra is due to the hoard of these Wilhelm Mayer medals in original colored boxes in the three smallest sizes that came out in the late 1980's to mid-1990's? I bought several sets at Long Beach (I believe they came out there) as did many others & the medals showed up frequently in the mail bid sales of the period. This was long before either PCGS or NGC slabbed exonumia but since many examples stayed in their round cardboard boxes they also survived in fine order until the advent of exonumia grading. While the 18mm - 26mm - 50mm sizes were available in quantity I don't recall seeing any of the 90mm medals with the group. I never did hear numbers on how many were found & I'd have to try & find the $ details but you can thank that discovery for the availability of HK-222 in choice to gem condition.
Here’s a picture of my 222 in its little cardboard box, like @tokenpro described. I submitted it to NGC a few years back and now it’s in a slab graded PF66 Ultra Cameo 🌞

Purchased raw, then TPG grading/encapsulation. Top pop and its prooflike
