Everyone always asks "why someone would do it." This may have been someone practicing their craft for bigger & better alterations. We will never know if it was done to deceive to make a big sale or circulate them slightly then try to have them graded or just to stir up coin collecting interest. It is also unknown how many of these they produced, I would think the number would be low as this type of alteration looks like it would have taken quite a bit of time per coin. Someone would need to have a lot of time on their hands to do this just for fun.
Well, if the 3-legged Bison didn't get everybody upset with me after they checked all their rolls the double posts will.
I have a feeling I'm not going to have very many friends around here.

You'll still be more popular than me so don't sweat it

Well at least I will be in good company, you are the only friend I need.

This was my first thread I started here...... I'm gonna think twice about starting another one.
I wish you would finish this one. Please tip the coin with the missing leg and take a magnified image of the leg using florescent light. Then we'll see just how deceptive the alteration actually is. Thanks
PS I like posts as yours as it teaches us. I once posted two counterfeit coins of the same date and everyone was sure the better made fake was the genuine coin. I'll never do that again as I took a lot of "heat" for being a smarty butt.

Will be happy to get a very close-up to try and show their work. I will be home in about an hour.
I took your post as legitimate, and understood you to have found something quite unique. I was rooting for you, as I do collect varieties, and have had a discovery myself- 2016-D Roosevelt DDR and was fortunate to have a write up in coin week, and error scope for said discovery.
Understand, there are a lot of collectors who frequent these boards who are not members; who not only unwrapped rolls of 2005-D's; but, also probably bought some on account of your "discovery." In the future, please be aware that unintended consequences occur.

You have posted magnified images. If you don't use a florescent light for the new image - don't bother.
What a day for computer stuff! I got home and my internet is off & the computer I like to do photo work with won't start. I had to go to the local hot spot to be able to post. Got some that are better and you can see the area that was worked has little dots. Will get even better photos loaded soon. It somehow even has a cartwheel effect in the area that was worked. There is a little toning/smudge under the belly, I'm thinking about giving it a quick dip for better photos.
@Insider2 Hope these are a little more up to standard.

Your point is well taken. I am sorry if I have upset anyone, that was not what I was trying to do. Congrats on your discovery & write up! I have had a discovery in coinworld too, I know the excitement. I would not want to discourage variety collecting in any way. I thought this would be kind of a fun way to learn, maybe I should have thought things out better. The only thing I can hope for is that only few people were upset and that more enjoyed the thread & learned something.
Thank you for rooting for me & sorry I disappointed you.

Really? And what WERE you trying to do?
Your original post was in December. This thread then died until someone resurrected it. It was only 3 months later after someone else resurrected it that you explained your ALLEGED original purpose and only after a SECOND series of deceptive posts.
With all due respect, that seems more like troll behavior. It strikes me as an attempt to create your own amusement rather than any attempt at education.

You are correct the original post was in December. I did not bump this thread, I was just fine letting it die in December.
Sorry you are upset by it and didn't learn anything from it.
Thanks for the followups. Certainly are some deceptive coins out there. Lots of discussion still taking place on that Czech Walking Liberty half dollar on another thread.

Very nice images. When to see the close pattern of stippling on one part of a coin as on the OP's coin, it usually is hiding a repair.,
Thanks for looking! Stippling is a good word to describe the texture and the florescent lighting made it show better. The stippling is only under the belly, it doesn't look like the other fields were messed with. The last photo shows how well they were able to match the texture of the coin. I still don't understand how they got the lustre & cartwheel back in that area.
The reflection of light (luster) from the repair should look completely different than the mint luster on the rest of the coin when using fluorescent light.

I completely agree.... but that is the crazy thing, no matter what light you use you just don't see it. It is like they somehow were most concerned about the visual effect with the bare eye. Until you put a 16x loupe or better on this it just doesn't show a thing. I don't know if I can get a video of it and if I did I would need some help from a member to attach it here.

Thanks for your words of encouragement!
Hope all my photos in the Random Picture thread don't duplicate like yours did.
Do I get double LOL's & likes for all the double posts?
Everywhere you got the SPAM thing will get posted to include edits that were SPAM blocked. Enjoy the cleanup or not.

Just make a thread to explain what happened and then post a link to the thread in any of the unspammed posts. They will all have the same time/date.

Who knows what kind of junk is on it maybe I should have checked it before. Maybe I should give it a quick bath.
I get what you mean about the big surprise. Everyone that didn't get mad at me for this thread got mad at me for all the double posts.

Florescent light only as per request, have to agree the florescent light helps a bunch. Gave it a quick dip to help get a better look.
Coin Facts for comparison.
One more with a little different lighting it shows the surface texture better but gives a polished or cleaned look.

That last image above clearly shows where the surface is disturbed from the removal of the leg.

Did they slip with the Dremel and nearly cut the back legs off?
