It's early, but, whoze going to FUN?

Desert MoonDesert Moon Posts: 5,992 ✭✭✭✭✭

Anyone interested in a PCGS board member 'social' get together on Friday evening at FUN? Meet up at one of the local bars? Some of us were throwing this idea around just after FUN this past year, so thought I would throw it out here......

Best, SH

Planning on my first FUN show!!

Question: If I submit coins for grading, reconsideration or whatever on say Thursday, when should they be available for pickup?

Read your signature line. Of all my collecting pursuits, collecting British hammered was/is the most enjoyable. I started with one of each monarch from 1066 and expanded that a bit, for instance all of the penny types of William I. It's great to look at the collection....it's almost like traveling back in time! These coins are much rarer than most realize.

I agree with you, although I will never get down to collecting one of each type of William the Conqueror penny.

I completed the one of each king or queen collection a year or so ago. The sleeper was Henry IV (1399 – 1314). After a dealer offered me a Henry IV penny in Poor to Fair (American grading standards) for well over $2,000, paying a bit more for a gold noble from which I could read everything seemed like a bargain.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

My apologies for hijacking this thread!

Henry IV coins are very rare because the weight of the silver and gold was reduced in 1412. As a result of this, many of the earlier coins were melted for bullion value. I tried to collect pennies of earlier monarchs and then transition to groats and then shillings. For Henry IV I have a half penny. If one is pursuing this endeavor, a cheaper way to go is to buy Anglo-Gallic coinage of Henry IV. I have a Hardi D'argent in nice VF...I think I paid less than $200 for it back in the 80s.

    Hmm... I'll ask again:

If I attend the show on Thursday and submit coins for on site grading or reconsideration, when should they be available to be picked up? Does the answer differ if I want true views (gold shield holder)?

  • Sunshine Rare CoinsSunshine Rare Coins Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Saturday, if you are lucky.

  • TopoftheHillTopoftheHill Posts: 200 ✭✭✭

Thanks for that answer! I'll plan to be in Orlando through Sunday to be safe. Does PCGS give a date, or is it a "check back Saturday" situation? Anyone else care to share their experience?

Perhaps PCGS can put a chair at the very far end of their multi-table for Ms. Boyd to say hello for 30 mins twice each day. Great advertising for the board and she can have a computer to walk show attendees through the sign-in process. We can hang out there on-and-off and the PCGS will look busy too. That's three pluses! :)

They can print up a ribbon too that members can attach to their name tag so we can pick each other out on the floor.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
