Here is the piece I have in my type set. It is graded MS-62, Brown. The 1806, Large Date, half cent is somewhat common in Mint State. The story is the Chapman Brothers, who were Philadelphia coin dealers in the early 1900s had a keg of them.

Here is an 1804 Spiked Chin half cent. This one is graded EF-45. The spiked chin came from an injured obverse die. That die is paired with four reverses. This coin was made from the first reverse die that was used with the Spiked Chin obverse. I am of the opinion that the reverse die was broken by the object that gave the obverse the spiked chin. Some people think that a screw got between the dies, which caused the damage.

Here is an 1807. This is a slightly better date, but this coin is really better because it is an early die state with dentiles showing on the obverse. This coin is graded AU-55.

The most common variety is the 1804, Plain 4, Stemless variety. It is listed in the Red Book. That one is common in every grade except when it shows a fair amount of red color. I have found to be quite scarce when it does although some experts say it's common that way too. That has not been my observation.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have slabbed pieces also, the Spiked Chin is a very cool variety.

I love half cents. Here are mine, in various brown colorations:

    PCGS AU58 CAC

PCGS MS64+ CAC (former 63 OGH)

    PCGS MS64 RB CAC (OGH)

I wish I could afford the earlier date types in a condition that I could afford, but not going to happen.
