1922 Peace Dollar, strong strike?

Hey guys, thought this peace dollar was interesting. Just paid melt for it, the obverse has been obviously cleaned. However, the reverse has a very strong strike and almost a matte like finish. I compared it to another 1922 Peace and the strike again is much more defined. I thought it was a fake at first but the weight is right and it clanks like silver. What do you guys think? Again it was just melt value but it got me interested. I just want to make sure it is nothing special before stack it in my junk silver.

Looks like an average strike. Rev a little better.

That's what I was thinking, darn must've been a beautiful coin before it was vigorously cleaned! The reverse compared to my MS62 is just so much more detailed. In hand it's even better...

The 1922 Philadelphia Peace Dollar has the distinction of being the single highest issue silver dollar in US history with some 51.7 million examples struck. For comparison, 1872 was the record-setting year for Seated dollars with 1.1 million coins struck.

The coin above is nice enough for melt value, but its original surfaces have been destroyed and the matte-like finish you refer to is probably just a lackluster coin that has had its original surfaces polished or rubbed away. The strike on your coin is just OK. Look at where the front of eagle's leg meets the bottom of the eagle's body. There should be full feather detail in this area.

There are nicely struck 1922-P coins around (I'm away from most of my photos right now, so I can't post one) but the really nicely struck coins are often from the Denver mint. Here's a nice 34-D I used to own. It's possible this is the coin from my old set that I miss the most. Compare the hair detail and feather detail in the center of the coin where it was the hardest for the planchet to fill the spaces in the dies. Also look at the sharpness of the lettering on "LIBERTY". Yes, I know the dies were reworked prior to the 1934 issues, but a sharply-struck coin should have nicely defined details everywhere.

Fun of the mill strike. Nothing special.

Yep, but the Ike isn't a silver dollar.

I'd rate it as a "D' coin. BTW, the 1976 type 11 Eisenhower dollar had the highest U,S dollar issue at 113,318,000

about 767 Million 2000 Sacs US Dollars were made, but then again they weren't silver either

Strong eagle's head, weak PEACE. Balanced out as a commercial unc. (Littleton standards).
