1872 IHC - Grade and Value?

Bought this today for $21 at a coin shop. A few letters of LIBERTY are visible, but the scratch and ding on the obverse would most likely net it down. It was labeled 1878:

"You can't get just one gun." "You can't get just one tattoo." "You can't get just one 1796 Draped Bust Large Cent."

Adding up the pluses and minuses, I'd grade it Good - 4, and the Gray Sheet says it's worth $85.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Not just a better date. It's the third best in the entire series, right behind 1877 and 1909-S. A crappy corroded one was sitting in the same tray for $40.

I've formed my own opinion. I would say G-06/VG-08 details, net G-04 because of a staple scratch on the obverse. I'll try to sell it for G-04 money, but if I can't, I'll just keep it because it fits my collection. :)

You probably have a good chance to find a buyer at G4 money. It is a better date and will fill an album space for a less discriminating collector.

    All glory is fleeting.

Nice coin for that price.... You can likely make a little profit on that one...Cheers, RickO

Working on a circulated IHC album. My 72 was in a box of german ww1 coins and paper money I had picked up. Got it home to sort through and found 2 indians in there. Couldn't believe one of them was a 72.

Tough date for sure... really difficult to find in higher circulated grades with no problems (ie... vf to au). I can make out an "L" in LIBERTY, but the gouge in the head dress and on the reverse will likely hold it back... G6 details, net G4. IMHO... regardless, sweet pick up for $20, and a nice addition to a lower end set...
