2018 Coin or Coin set

Looking for ideas (cant make up my mind) on which 2018 (grandson's birth year) coin or coin set to buy him.
This will be a yearly tradition. One coin or coin set for his birthday.
Any suggestions on any certain coin /coins is greatly appreciated 👍😉

I really like this one:
The coin, the grade and the label.

Big question is budget? How much are you really looking to spend?

I really like this one too! So many to choose from ;-)
Birthday set is always nice $19.95
I dont mind so much about the cost as much as I would like it to be some kind of set. Or all the same types of coins that I can buy from now until he turns 18. Starting this year I am buying "something" and then next year I will buy a 2019 and so on. Hope I am making sense, lol
Maybe a silver proof set each year.
If you can swing it a Mint Set of all the coins of the year....AND.....a Silver Proof Set.
This way you get all the regular coins and mint marks minted for the year.
Or silver eagles (proof or burnished unc.)
Get an inexpensive but nicely packed item from the US Mint, and then enclose a stock certificate for something long term and within your budget. Repeat each year. This will eventually be something the child will really appreciate....the coins by themselves end up being unappreciated, non-appreciating and ignored.
I have done this for their parents and love this idea. I am just checking the group's opinion to see what other collectors opinions are on single coins, sets or specific coin each year, ugh! The list is endless, lol
Thank you
Love the stock certificate idea to go with the coin!
Thanks so much!
How about a series I Savings bond to go along with a coin set. I have 5 grand kids and each received a $100 savings bond for their birthdays and on Christmas until age 18. ( I have only 1 remaining under 18 ) At 18, they all had a nice chunk of change that otherwise would have been spend. ( None could cash in prior to age 18)
I had lots of proof sets growing up. With all the mint products, and the fact it is modern common stuff, I got tired of with them and the space they took. Sold them all off while they were still worth something and bought real coins.
With a proof set and a silver proof set you are looking at $80/year I see the 1/10 ounce gold is twice that so probably not an option.
How about finding a nice coin from 1918 or 1818 that might fit in an annual budget? Maybe a large cent, and two or three cent pieces as time passes. Something cool in a slab. You have 18 choices over 18 years. Those are what have a wow factor in my opinion.
As someone posted, a Silver Kennedy or a Silver Eagle (in an album or a PCGS/NGC box) would be my choice. That way you can look forward to filling an album hole or spot in the box every year.
The stock certificate or savings bond is a good idea too as it's a nice way to save money over the years.
What about a century type set for each year, for example one 1918 coin and one 2018 coin, each year until 1936/2036.
Each year two new Coins, maybe different denominations per year to make a collection out of it. Dimes one year, then nickels and so on. You could have a type set including Barbers, Mercury, Washington, Buffalo, Jefferson, Franklin, Kennedy, peace, morgan, Sacagawea, Roosevelt, possibly stretched into gold, silver and SAE/GAE.
He would have a diverse century parallel type set.
Edit to say
You could even do a gradual rise in grades for the 1900s Coins starting at lowest grade up to ms66-67. This could demonstrate the difference in grades and effect of wear.

Silver proof set would be a nice tradition.
My wife has gifted a family member with a set every year.
She started long before I got back into the hobby.
Just in the last five years or so the quality began to be so poor (ticks, marks etc.) that we finally gave up and just went to the local B&M to pick out a decent set (not looking for 70s BTW)

I give ASE's for births in the family....They seem to be appreciated (no collectors in the family) though and I often get comments about them. Cheers, RickO
Stock certificate might require a brokage account and a tax liability if dividends are paid. I use US Series I Savings Bonds.
If you want them to all the same for years, the only annual sets that guaranteed be produced (by the US Mint) are the Uncirculated, Proof and Silver Proof sets, The Eagles are a pretty safe bet, too.
All the other sets are just alternate ways for the Mint to package coins and are not mandated by law, so could be discontinued at any time.
Personally, I'd do proof ASE's. Nothing like shiny hunks of silver...
(IRL, I did savings bonds.
)
I'd start with a 2018 ASE. Then every year, choose a different U.S. coin type as listed in the Dansco 7070 Album:
Dansco Album 7070: US Type - Major Types From 1800.

Wonderful idea. Thanks!
Is there a SMS set every year? I'm still learning!> @ricko said:
I have quite a few as well and love mine! Thanks! > @Aspie_Rocco said:
Really like this idea, never thought about 2 and how awesome would that be.!.!
Thank you SO much
I really like the idea of a 1918 and 2018 and so on. Didnt even think of that! Thank you!
What do you consider an SMS set? Like the Enhanced and Reverse Proof sets?
Their catalog numbers suggest these are just one off sets. Nor are they legislated to be produced, like the core three sets.
