Can somebody help me understand what caused the missing detail on the Mexico 8 Reales pictured below. On the obverse, the "R" is almost completely missing at 3 o'clock and there is some cracking around 10 o'clock. On the reverse, the "8" is completely missing at 9 o'clock and there is cracking at 2 o'clock.

Either the planchet was defective at the points shown or the coin was at some time in a mounting.

    All glory is fleeting.
  • Agree with defective planchet. You can see "waves" in a few different areas which is a common sign of this. Strike pressure was unevenly distributed.

Tapered planchet resulting in an area of weak strike.

By the way - congrats on winning that one. I was watching it and for under $150 it was a great deal.

I agree with the others. However, I prefer to say there was EITHER not enough pressure (weak or uneven strike) or not enough planchet metal to completely fill the die (clip, uneven or underweight planchet).

This coin was NOT mounted. As mentioned above, the stress cracks are the giveaway as the possible cause.

Thanks everybody for the responses. I don't think it would be caused by mounting since this is in a PCGS holder and not marked as damaged (that would be a bit egregious for them to miss). Defective/tapered planchet makes sense and was along the lines I was thinking. Despite the missing details, I think it gives the coin some interesting character.
