Interesting! When you say modern gold, which coins do you mean? How do you know where they're prices are selling?
here is a gold coin that was released by the mint in February with a issue price of 200. keep in mind the seller pays final value fees and paypal fees also, so even bigger loss

Wasn't much demand to start with. Very few have done well. For the most part they are bullion.

When I think of modern gold, I'm thinking post 1986 bullion and proof issue AGEs and commemoratives from our Mint.
Outside of some initial interest when they go in sale, demand certainly wanes over time.

Going down ... The only reason why my holdings in modern commemorative gold coins is above water is because I bought them when gold bullion was a lot lower.
