Chin whiskers on 36 Buff

Namvet69Namvet69 Posts: 8,970 ✭✭✭✭✭

Checked lots of buffalos and only this one has a lot of radiating striation lines around the chin of the NA. Is this an indication of repairing something during minting? I'm many buffs I see nickel alloy lines but not this. Thanks for your knowledge. Peace Roy

I think what you are seeing is just die erosion.
Buff's do have a variety known as Chin Whiskers that is due to clashing from the reverse die.
    It appears a little different.
Here is an example on my 13 Type 1 as a comparison.

On your obv I see weaker similar lines from the lips to under the nose but not as strong. I see one raised horizontal artifact under the chin that is not a thin line. My second image to the right has strong lines, I count 24+. Thanks for your knowledge. Peace

The line under the chin is what is referred to as the chin whisker variety. It is from a clash,
The thinner lines you are referring to are from erosion of the die,
The metal used on these coins was very hard on the dies.

"Chin whiskers" refers to the EPU die clash from the reverse. As Alain has suggested above it appears to be die erosion.

Here is an example with a very prounouced chin whisker. As alluded to ‘chin whisker’ is the name given when lettering from EPU clashes with obverse. It really doesn’t look like whiskers at all.

Another example, this one still in my set. 1914 was a bumper year for this clash. This one is slighty askew due to slightly rotated reverse die

Thanks for that, I also found a buff with "unum" under the chin but I figured that one out cause I can see the letters. This is why CU is the best forum on the planet. Your buffs are superb. Peace Roy
