Got my first Liberty Seated quarter! Arrows and Rays for my Type Set. I hope I made a good choice.

1853 Liberty Seated Quarter with Arrows & Rays. My 2nd attempt at photographing a coin and editing it. I'm still not happy with the results so feel free to give me some pointers on that too please.

    I don't like it. However, I may change my mind after I see your coin.

    Looks like a nice original coin. The problem with me is I hate original dirt. Don't recommend it but I'd stick in in my Ultrasonic cleaner with some soapy distilled water. Want to keep the gray color and remove the dark dirt.

    DON'T DO THIS AT HOME! The best conservation is done in degrees and the Ultrasonic treatment may be my
    STEP #4. :wink:

    @Insider2 Thanks! I agree with you, I should definitely NOT do that at home! :D

    @Insider2
    Can we dip it in a jewelry 'vibrating cleaning device' ?

  • ParadisefoundParadisefound Posts: 8,588 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Congrats @SiriusBlack ... I like to see it cleaner tho ;) I can just see what I would do with the dirts between the rays :)

  • SiriusBlackSiriusBlack Posts: 1,120 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Maybe it's a contender for conservation and grading/slabing?

    I like it as is though the contrasting dark colored rim and fields of the obverse and the completely opposite bright rim and fields of the reverse made me think the two images were from two different coins until I read the post.

  • SiriusBlackSiriusBlack Posts: 1,120 ✭✭✭✭✭

    @LJenkins11 I'm not an expert at coin photography so I could probably do a better job with more practice, but there is a difference when the coin is in hand and I alternate front and back. I don't know if the term is right, but it looks like there's more luster on the reverse to me. I assume this is why it looks brighter. My exposure was identical and my edit of each side was identical so there must be some difference between sides. :)

    I like it. That is a nice type coin.

    It would be interesting to see a before and after of @Insider2 proposed conservation ( I would really call it a light restoration) but I like it as is.

  • SiriusBlackSiriusBlack Posts: 1,120 ✭✭✭✭✭

    @AngryTurtle It would be! I bought this to fit in my 7070 Type Set Album though which means I hadn't intended to get it slabbed really. Maybe sometime! I would definitely be interested to see Trueview's after conservation!

    Nice old coin... I would leave it as is and just enjoy it...It has crusty character... Cheers, RickO

    Nice coin as is.

    I'd leave it alone or at most get a q-tip and acetone and go over it lightly to take off the dirt, gunk. JMHO

    Looks more interesting as is. Think of the adventures this coin has had. Just like human faces that gain character with age so has this coin. Nice find and addition to your set.

  • Insider2Insider2 Posts: 14,452 ✭✭✭✭✭

    If this coin were cleaned properly, even using just acetone, it would still have the nice gray color of a moderately circulated coin. :)

    Nice coin. Why risk ruining it. Acetone is OK, but skip the rest, or send it to experts.

    @jesbbroken @RogerB

    Thanks! I like the coin fine the way it is honestly. I wouldn't try to do anything to it myself. Honestly I'm about 95% at leave it alone, but I am interested in the whole sending it in for grading and maybe even seeing if it could get CAC. Mainly because I've never sent a raw coin in to anywhere before so this would be my first attempt and since I like the look of the coin and the rest of you all seem to as well, it seems like maybe it's a good candidate to see what all the fuss is about?

    Yes, why not? It looks quite original just like a 165 year old coin should look. Don't mess with it.

    Would spending more money on a tiny sticker make the coin any better or nicer or more appealing to you?

    Hmmmm.. you have a point. It’s also damn hard to wedge a big plastic slab into the quarter sized hole in my actual type set album, where it currently resides.

    If you decide to sell one day, consider options available at that time....things that will enhance value or desirability then -- but not now unless you gain something tangible or emotional about a sticker. (I realize this is a conservative approach - for which the basic question is always: "How does this improve the situation and at what cost?")

    (Consider: 10 years from now a detailed specialty reference on these coins appears, and yours is demonstrated to be a very rare and desirable variety. Nothing you have done prior will mean anything in getting maximum value or recognition - you will have to pay gain and again.)

    So does an ultrasonic jewelry gizmo really vibrate dirt and grime out of the nooks and crannies of a coin? Peace Roy

    I like it as-is, raw and without ‘restoration’. I haven’t worked on my 7070 for a few years but my recollection is that finding original seated coinage was a slow go. I’d put it in your album, enjoy it and the hunt to find pieces to match. If there comes a time to sell, then submit by all means

  • SiriusBlackSiriusBlack Posts: 1,120 ✭✭✭✭✭

    I was really nervous about posting photos for fear you would all point out some problems I didn’t see. I’m really glad to hear from so many people that they like the coin! Thanks for all of the advice and guidance.
